I picked this tune up from my friend Gus Darnell, who is learning fiddle from the renowned Beverly Smith, and it has fast become one of my favorite tunes.
The Fiddler's Companion entry is brief:

In a Fiddle Hangout thread some folks suggest that it is related to the tune Chinquapin Hunting but i couldn't find much on that front. Theres no tab of this tune AFAIK but Josh does have it at oldtimejam.com/Jam.html and i found it to be fairly easy to catch by ear. His version has excellent banjo and fiddle playing and is worth checking out regardless of whether you play along.
I'm really hoping some of y'all can post your own mp3s or video of this tune, theres not much in the BHO archives. Here is a clip of Gus and I playing it. You will be amazed to learn that he has been playing fiddle for less than a year!

I have it on a tape made at Norman's house which a friend put the tape on cd for me. I don't have the recordings with me but there is a bunch of really good stuff there and all with Wade's great 3-finger picking.

Chip - ok, I think I might be confusing that version with the one Norman did on the "Train on the Island" LP...now I REALLY NEED to have get that Norman/Wade track...any chance? I love Wade Ward's 3 finger picking, it is really good stuff and I've been on an OT 3 finger kick recently, have been listening to lot's of Oren Jenkins, J.C. Sutphin and Jack Burchett lately...anyway I can get an mp3 of that CD? I'll give you my first born (he might get drafted by the MLB out of college this year) so it could be a good deal for you...just don't tell my wife...

I went to my first jam ever last week and they played this song. The melody has stuck in my head since then, and I really need to sit down and learn it. This is a timely tune of the week for me! Hoping to hear some good solo clawhammer versions to learn from!

The Train on the Island LP (Davis Unlimited but reissued on SpringFed a few years ago) was Uncle Norm playing with his sons on guitars & Rufus Quesenberry playing wonderfully no-nonsense clawhammer banjo. There's a charming picture of Edmonds, Quesenberry (ie, a tiny man & a huge man) with guitarist Dale Poe (a medium-sized man) sitting on the Ward's porch on the Lomax cultural Equity website, from 1959.
Many of the Norman Edmonds recordings with Wade Ward's wonderful fingerpicking were made by Peter Hoover in the late 50s-early 60s, and some by Mike Seeger soon thereafter. These recordings have been passed around in private circulation for years, mostly by fans of fingerpicking. The Hoover COllection originals are at Indiana University. Alan Lomax also recorded Edmonds & a band at this time & you may also be able to hear Ward's fingerpicking by going to the Lomax/ Cultural Equity website & searching for Norman Edmonds. GG

We play this one fairly frequently in Tucson -- thanks to Whitey the fiddler. It can be kind of boring to play -- or it can be very fun. It all depends on mood of the players. But I guess that's true of every tune.
