Robby,

Just sit back and really enjoy that part.  It's like being a kid on Christmas eve.  Savor the anticipation...it seems like it doesn't happen all that much as we get older.

Mr. Yates, what a work of art! Thank you for sharing this process with us. The pictures and comments are great. I have a great deal of appreciation for the heart and effort you put into building banjos. I have grown to be a big fan and both you and Ron have my respect. Skillet Head looks great and I can't wait to hear Robby play it.

Robby....you lucky dog! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and anticipation with us - we can't wait for you to be proudly playing this thing.

Great looking machine. That sunburst is awesome and I'm a huge fan of the no filler in the Mahogany. Can't wait to hear it either!

 Robby,

Congrats on your "new baby"!  It looks great.  Maybe RS will upload some samples with it.  Then when you get it I hope you'll do the same.  It'd be cool to hear the contrast.  And as far as  talent, timing and tone goes, you, my friend take a backseat to no one!

I'll second that.  Robby's got it all.

On a different note, I'm curious about that '50s steel tailpiece.  If my memory serves, I tried to use those and couldn't make them work at all.  In fact, I apparently threw them away because I can't find them.  Now it appears they're part of the Skillet Head mojo.  Who'da thunk it?

jfb - Posted - 01/23/2012:  16:44:46

If that proves to be so then we know how to back up and produce it. It will likely be in a 75 style model or something.

pPP

Perhaps a DA-75...wink

drifty - Posted - 01/23/2012:  17:04:02

I remember now, the ones I tried wouldn't pull the strings down enough.  They were apparently flexed out at the corner bend from metal fatigue.  The adjustment thumbscrew wouldn't do anything once the string pressure began to apply.  I'd turn the adjustment screw in all the way and the TP height would remain the same -- almost straight from the string hooks to the bridge, like a no-knot.

I'll second the comment on Robby's tone, taste and timing, he takes a backseat to NO ONE! And folks, it's been that way since I met him in 1978.....made me mad then.....still does!!!! But I sure love to hear him pick!!

Your videos say otherwise... no stretch involved! I'm looking forward to hearing what you do with your Skillethead.

I second that.... Motion on the floor stands..Yates Skillethead for banjo of the year.   All in favor, say "I".

prewartb3 - Posted - 01/25/2012:  13:48:52

The skillett tailpiece is way cool. Are you making them? In what way does the TP contribute to the sound? It looks like a 50's TP. yes

Ron Stewart - Posted - 01/25/2012:  15:21:38

Oh Robby,

There's a box in the living room......what might it be? Ron Stewart DVD's from Acutab......

Ron Stewart - Posted - 01/25/2012:  15:23:09

Oh, I forgot......there seems to be a big box with some sort of instrument in it.....from Yates banjos.....Hell, I didn't order a banjo....

Ron doesn't have to order banjos. He just stares them down and they give in.

robbyboone - Posted - 01/25/2012:  16:40:35

I got to thinkin' Ronnie......SINCE it's there, you might as well go ahead and open the box and take a look at it. It MIGHT be something interesting.......just sayin'  :)

Ron Stewart - Posted - 01/25/2012:  17:00:33

Well, after I broke the neck heel, re-glued it with super glue, then busted a piece out of the flange, then cracked the resonator, and subsequently busted the rim and tone ring, you have a sound sample of the first notes played on it coming your way. I'll cut something to post on here shortly! Enjoy my friend, the fourth string sounds like a cannon concussion. It sounds like SkilletHead, what else?

robbyboone - Posted - 01/25/2012:  17:47:11

All I can say is WOW!!! When you have time to post something here, I believe the folks that have been waiting for sound samples will say the same thing. Absolutely outstanding and although it's a little older, it's still only a few hours old just as yours was on the initial sound samples that got this started.

I might have a flathead Style 3 for sale soon.......

Ron Stewart - Posted - 01/25/2012:  18:09:44

I posted a sound sample is in my music. Yates Son of Skillet Head is the title.

Ron Stewart - Posted - 01/25/2012:  18:15:26

Sorry folks, got wrong sample up there, had to take it down, the one to look for is Robby Boone's Son of Skillet Head under my music.

Warren Yates - Posted - 01/25/2012:  18:48:04

This was the last time I saw it. At that time only a few things were broken.

Ron Stewart - Posted - 01/25/2012:  18:52:48

Don't worry Warren, I glued it all back up, put a cedar rim in it, 12 ply, and a solid white oak resonator. I soldered the flange back together, and it's all good now. Epoxy on the string ends keeps them from popping out of the eyelet holes in the tuners.

eMike - Posted - 01/25/2012:  18:57:28

If that's the one you played on your latest sound file, I'll take it if Warren doesn't want it back.

That is definitely one fine-sounding banjo.

Thank you emike! The sound file is in my music on my homepage, and it is titled Robby Boone's son of Skillet Head. You might have to fight Robby for it, but then again, the three first ones would be hard to tell apart. I've played all three, and they are spot on, and each of them will take names.

Warren Yates - Posted - 01/25/2012:  19:07:47

Ron I was worried that the Bondo might have broken out but if you didn't notice it, then never mind.

Here is the sound sample that you sent me. I LIKE IT!

Ronnie......You are correct.....I played the sound sample of yours and mine back to back.......scarily similar. I mean I know it's the same track and it's YOU so it's gonna sound very similar on any GOOD banjo but with some slight tonal differences, but these things sound almost exactly the same.....amazing!

Warren, you out did yourself......this thing rocks!

drifty - Posted - 01/25/2012:  19:15:12

Yea, but that ain't where the banjo is! The banjo is still another 3 1/2 or 4 hours from Nashvegas!! But I would be a LOT closer to it than I am now. It needs to stay with Mr Stewart for a spell.......it'll be worth the wait.

From Greylock to Bean Blossom - Posted - 01/25/2012:  19:27:02

Wow! Sounds really sweet. You had to get that cleared with the government cause in most places cloning is illegal. It is one beautiful banjo in appearance and sound.

Roger that, Robby.  And it's true, the similarity in sound between the two SOS "brothers" is uncanny. Amazing.
