Well I'm huge on Micros, my brother has been brewing for years & is an expert, plus my favorite restaurant serves their own Micros, which I love for the sour ales... That would be Cascade Brewing, and I usually go to Raccoon Lodge to drink 'em, it's about 5 driving minutes away. I have a walking distance Old Market Pub, the actual name, and they brew pretty good beers. Drinking Session from Full Sail now, another one of my favorite beers & brewers. I love their LTD series as well. I will always have a soft spot for Lagunitas, some of my favorite beers & they got me into Micros.
I'm not a beer snob though, no sir, I'll guzzle all the Coors/Light & Keystone Ice/Light in the world if ya give it to me. Long as it's not Budweiser, SR-211, OE, Camo, Miller, or any of that bum piss, buhhhh!

I've been drinking Guinness Extra Stout for 12 solid years now..
Shiner is a dark lager... so much lighter than anything Guinness makes... for that reason alone, it might be the way to have a cold, dark brew, but have a lighter body for the hot weather we're experiencing right now...
I also tried Shiner Ruby Red recently...
It's Grapefruit beer!
Light in color, but high on the flavor scale...
The liquor store I work at can't keep it in stock right now...
I would have to say, however, that it's the same two people that come in and buy us out...
One of them gave me a bottle to try when I got off of work..
Good stuff and perfect for hot weather!

When I first read this a couple weeks ago, I went out and got a few different beers to try. When I am in mood for a beer I usually go to a little store that doesn't have much selection. I went to a bigger store to see if I could find the Shiner black. This store had a huge selection with beers from all around the world which could be bought in single bottles. I found the Shiner black. It was good but it wasn't my favorite. I cant remember the names of the others I tried. I should have written them down. My favorite was an oatmeal stout which I had never heard of before.

Now, oatmeal is known to lower cholesterol... could this be considered a health drink?

What a day and age with all the microbrews around. Some of my favorites I had are: Rogue Mocca Porter, Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald, almost any Sam Adams but my all time favorite...... Drum roll please.......any beer by Samuel Smith, brewed in England. Don't have a beer very often anymore but if I did, that's the one I'd choose.

cooler months have me looking for 'hoppiness.' the choice if it can be found here in the 'land of pleasant living'* is the anchor steam brewing co. in san francisco. i'm partial to their liberty ale. the namesake is good too. the dogfishheads from delaware are good too.
during the heat of summer, i'm fine with whatever domestic pilsner's available.

Sammy Smith makes great, and very different, beers. Nothing like anything you've had, most likely. Taddy Porter is good, Imperial Stout is good...if you like soy sauce.

Anchor Brewing Company (which someone mentioned above...) is possibly my favorite brewery, even though as far as I know, they only have a few beers. But the Liberty Ale and the Porter they make are two of my favorite beers. And the Old Foghorn Barleywine is really good too. Never cared for steam beers in general, and I don't like Anchor Steam.

I'm sure you know this, but the Guinness on tap, and in the cans, which is Guinness pasteurized stout, is very light bodied, only 3.2% alcohol, and has fewer calories than Coors Light. Despite what everyone seems to think, it's a very light dark beer. Possibly the lightest dark beer out there.
But yeah, Guinness Extra Stout (used to be the only guinness in the US in bottles, but now they're bottling the light stuff, too) is heavy, thick beer.

This thread is making me thirsty. I'm gonna have to grab one of my current favorites pretty soon. Right now. I've got Leinenkugel's Creamy Dark, Samuel Adams' Cream Stout and Independence Bootlegger Brown Ale to choose from in the fridge.
I prefer pale ales, amber ales, brown ales and black lagers. I also like porters and stouts if they're not overly bitter. Lately, IPA's have struck me as just too hoppy.
The American lager beers I remember from the sixties had a lot more body and flavor than today's domestic mass-market beers. Anybody know of any old-fashioned full flavored lager beers like those?

Not sure what those used to taste like...but more brewers of "real" beer are making light stuff, instead of the crazy race to make the most alcoholic, hop-filled beer possible. Red Hook is making a Pilsner that I like. I think it's Deschutes who put out "Session" beer. In little stubby bottles like Red Stripe. It's not bad.
IPA's are always very hoppy. Do you know the history? IPA and Imperial Stout have similar roots.
Many Czech Pilsners are very good. Pinkus is the only one I can remember right now...
edit: sorry, Full Sail makes Session Lager. I like the Red Hook better, but a lot of people I know really like Session.

This place is a grocery store of custom micro-brewed beers and ales...
Lord, have mercy!
You can buy individual cans and bottles of almost anything you want!
I bought several German made lagers and pilsers and was completely satisfied with all of them...
But...
The Belhaven Scottish Ale knocked me out!

Walmart doesn't sell beer here in Mn., but Sam's Club does.
They have Sam Adams 12 packs (you have to buy two) at $21.46 for the two.
$21.46 for four six-packs makes the price at (about) $5.36 per six pack.

Modelo and Tacate are both good Mexican beers... the perfect answer on a hot, humid day when you need something to refresh with.
There are more custom, fuller-bodied, flavor-filled beers...
But every beer has it's place under the sun...
A beer for every need...
So many of the custom made, craft beers are relatively pricey... and maybe not suitable for every budget...
In this financial climate, I can't afford to drink what I'd really like all of the time... but I'll splurge occasionally and have some fun.
