John, the video and performance in it were great! Just wish I was an expert/professional like stringbreaker - I wouldn't have deleted my mp3's I posted after playing for four or five months. I plan to post some better sounding ones now that I've progressed somewhat. Thought I'd wait a bit to see if ol' stringbreaker would put some of his up first... Sure like to learn some of his hot EXPERT licks before I post again!

For the record, I’m not part of anybody’s posse, nor am I trying to get anybody ousted from the website. Like most of you, I’m here to be part of a community of mutually supportive web-friends who share a common interest. If there are misunderstandings or sincere differences of opinion, I think it’s important that we resolve them in a courteous fashion that leaves everyone’s feelings intact when it’s over.

OMG that is so funny! Anyone who cannot take that is exactly why he obviously ginned up the song. That's alot of talent in that video and humor and great flathead tone. Really solid and full tone executed very well. Brett.

The KIDD - Posted - 03/28/2011:  19:49:56

Hey Dave,
No..No tab...totally off the cuff as is 90% of my audio/video.The parts where there are 4 banjos' is just harmony on the high end with counter melody gellin it together in the lower octave. Just 3rd's 5ths and 7ths. Easy concept really.Took alittle bit of experimenting to get the F passages to come back into G. Many possiblties!

Banjophobic - Posted - 03/28/2011:  20:10:37

Thats one funny video man, haha. I 'think' the Kidd is talking taking a jab at a certain class of posters in general, not the 'posers group'. Of course, I could be totally off base and the Kidd could be trying out for Americas Funniest Videos show.haha

Hey Dan,

I’m not sure I know the complete picture, but I’ll try to summarize what I know of the background of how “Last Train from Poserville” originated and why so many are big fans of this video even if it seems a little critical to some.

A small number of members (the referenced “posers”) have made excessive contradictory posts on certain threads to posts from more well established players and members on some of the Scruggs and Theory forums. While it’s totally within their right to post their opinions and question others, on a number of occasions, posts from lesser known players have gotten insulting (intentional or not) and it’s gotten some of the more well established players frustrated.

Frustrations aren’t limited to BHO regulars. Critical posts have been seen to question thoughts from Ron Stewart, Pat Cloud and other arguably more well established players in the banjo world today.

It’s one thing to frustrate some of the regulars who already garner a lot of support from fellow BHO members from their numerous tips and free instructional video posts (check out John’s posts this week on Gold Rush and Old Joe Clark or Banjophobic’s Lick of the Week series). But when the contradictory posts ultimately result in running off someone like Pat Cloud, this generates a lot of frustration and tension in the BHO community. As a small example (there are many others), check out the second page of the “Circle of Fifths” thread, banjohangout.org/topic/202453/2, you can see Pat Cloud (banjola1) get annoyed with what most would feel is an insulting comment and essentially post that he’s leaving the forum. As a frequent poster on this site, I can’t tell you how disappointed I get that some of my favorite players are hesitant to post here because of this kind of activity.

I don’t think John’s video is a sweeping commentary about all players with lesser skills that have opinions. He’s making a uniquely clever dig at a very small group of individuals who have frustrated a group of very skilled and well meaning posters. There might be a little bit of “spirit” in his challenge to some of these “posers”. But I think there’s a lot of support to the theme that if you’re challenging ideas from Ron Stewart, then let’s hear what you have to offer… post some sound clips, or meet us in the chat room and show us what you can play.

Dan wanted everyone to share in his "opinion".He wanted to be judge jury and executioner with his first post and for everyone to jump on board with HIS assessment. His opinion is TEE TOTALLY wrong, it assinanated my character when my PPH proves totally contrary. He doesnt wanna hear about Ron Stewart demanding soundfiles and back track get the necessary info for making an informed post/accusation. He wants US to to do it for him.
(just going on HIS wording).Heck, where was he when the audio was posted back in 2010?
Nope, Im sure its clear by now to everyone why he's on this thread. Being a poser has nothing to do with abilty. Every newbie/novice on here that posts video/audio knows me by name "John Kuhn" and finds me a friend and HUGE supporter as I do them.I need their support as much as they need mine. Thats what makes Sound Off work so well where there NEVER a harsh word between Player.. Ability doesnt matter. Being a Poser has to do with CHARACTER.. Period.. Look it up.....

gdoc - Posted - 03/29/2011:  00:48:40

Very well stated Banjov1,

There was just plain nothing offensive in the song. If it nailed some posers, well, they got it coming. Their posers.

I tried to remember the first time I heard that phrase, I think it had to do with skate boarding or close. People who don't really care about the "sport' or "style of music". They just want to be, as I told a friend of mine, "a tin god". They want to come into a established group and become the leader, deserving or not. Go away! Just go away!

If I was in my second lesson, there is no way I could find offense to that song. If fact, I probably would want to learn it.

Banjov1 and the Kidd are right. There are too many, and ONE is too many, people here who have no clue as to what it took Pat Cloud to get to where he is at today, or what the Kidd put into learning Banjo, Guitar, Drums, recording and editing. They didn't just wake up one day, like posers, and say "hey, I think I'll be a musican!"

No, they like others, put in hours of learning, practice and more practice. They been there, they aren't the posers, they are the real thing.

gdoc - Posted - 03/29/2011:  00:56:46

And a PS.....

The real people are the ones who are ready and willing to help the "newbies". Me, I've been around awhile, not a newbie, but not on the same plane ask the Kidd, Pat Cloud, or others. (names mentioned here only because of previous posts. There are too many great players to name who help people.)

xplainer - Posted - 03/29/2011:  06:04:33

This is thread summarizes my problem with the BHO. It shows how egotistical some members are. In their mind, they are far above anyone else and given the opportunity, they will let you know. It’s not based on experience, knowledge or pedigree, it’s based purely on their ego. It’s like me taking exception to a discussion by Pete Rose on hitting (or placing a bet).

Thank the Lord that Earl isn’t on here. I can guarantee you someone would take issue with what he’d say.

The video is funny, well done and only offensive to someone who thinks too much of themselves.

Come on folks, we are just banjo players, with different skills levels, experiences and music knowledge. And that’s all we are.

P.S. – This is my opinion….and you can have a different one.

John Allison - Posted - 03/29/2011:  06:07:48

Enjoyable. I do not see that John was poking fun at anyone or had any malicious intent what-so-ever. I thing he was just plain having fun making a good video. And, so what, if he was ..... are we so thin skinned that things like this bother us. What about all those thousands of jokes aimed at the banjo player. Now, if the banjo player is blonde that is even worse.

You are dead on Kidd. Its not only about playing, its about having character and about true intention. You and Banjov1 have summed it up very well. This video resonates with me on many levels. I was in the theory forum thread when Pat experienced first hand, this type of poser. Its one thing to try and bully/ silence experienced Hangout members, but quite another to take cheap shots at someone of Pats stature who was there trying to help. Who better to help folks understand theory, applied to banjo, than Pat Cloud? The poser can claim a 'victory' for himself in that he managed to scare of Pat. But in the end, its the Whole Forum and everyone there who lost. If folks will start standing up against these posers, maybe they will take a hint.

We could have gained much from Pat's vast experience.
What a shame to slam that door.

I think the only ones taking offense at that video and that song are the ones feeling it might be hitting too close to home (coughcoughstringbreakercoughcough).

Great arrangement (I heard "Last Train to Clarksville" on the radio last night and was thinking what a great banjo tune it would be), nicely performed and well put together. I'm not the greatest banjo player just now but I know a thing or two about editing and you did a really good job of it.

And considering all the banjo jokes there are, if you are so thin-skinned that you find that song offensive, you've really picked the wrong instrument.

red dragon posted opinion. nothing wrong. you think since you play longer you are right. if thats case you should be able to argue point, if you cant you cry to mods. pat slammed door on himself. cant take heat get out of kitchen.
dan didnt like it. dan has 300 posts and not expert. borchelt didnt like it. didnt say nothing to him. he is good player lots of posts.
its good kid took blogs down where he talked about posers. then people could see what you think. how everyone is out to get you.

MTBanjo - Posted - 03/29/2011:  08:49:05

I in no way agree with stringbreaker but I think you guys are taking this poser idea too far. Now, if anyone disagrees with you, they're a poser? I can't even watch the video because youtube is blocked at work...I'm guessing I'd like it, but it seems like Dan is just voicing his opinion that it's mean spirited, without insulting anyone or being nasty, and not knowing the full extent of the situation, and suddenly he's a "poser"?? Give it a rest.

I understand where you guys are coming from. Being a "pro", and having newbies come along and think they know everything because they read it on the internet, rather than from experience, is beyond annoying. But I'll agree with Stringbreaker on that one point...you aren't calling Don a poser. Is there something about Danthebanjoman (maybe his PPH?) that makes you think he's after you? Because I don't see it on this thread.

I think it's cool that you guys are fighting back against what you've labled posers. But take it easy! Whether it started as a good idea or not, you're quickly moving into reverse bullying. Think. Don't just jump on any newbie who questions you and accuse them of being part of some larger conspiracy, when they have no clue who you are, or the history of BHO.

Over & out.

I like it! But as I have opinions and no sound file postings, I think it wouldn't be tongue in cheek enough if I joined. Although most of my opinions fall outside of the banjo playing related topics...I'm sure I'm a poser too, in the pros opinion.

BanjoDuster - Posted - 03/29/2011:  09:54:39

My seemingly harmless and well-intentioned post has uncontrollably “taken wings” and spread outside my intended purpose. Its purpose is lost in what I’d loosely characterize as an oral “donnybrook,” that tends to grow, for the most part, with passing comments. While some of these departing comments had merit, the rest just put the OP in a “downward spiral” of non-productivity and wasted time and effort. Who really wants that? I know I don’t.

I visited and read all the comments posted in the BHO “Posers Trolls and Malcontents,” group. As a result, I gained a feeling as to what their likely motive is. If I could express it in a single word, I’d say they simply want to be “disruptive.” As to why they may want to “stir the pot,” (their words, not mine), I could offer conjecture only.

If one’s purpose, IMO, is to habitually cause dissension, fracture friendships or malign one’s character (in here or other forums), why not try to find and resolve what ails you. Life is too damn short and precious (to me and others) to get caught up in stuff, most of which, isn’t worth a “hill of beans!”

I know there are two sides to every story, but it's not necessary to "do battle" amid a topic that was (and is) well-intentioned.

Everybody on here has their own opinions, and that is fine. In fact, it is in general a good thing... a diversity of opinions. But a few people think that their opinions trump the decades of experience of WORLD CLASS players like Ron Stewart, Pat Cloud, Sonny Osborne, and others.

I think that anybody with that perspective crosses the line from being a person with a unique opinion to share (a good thing), to being... well.... at best a Narcissist, and at worst an opinionated jerk who likes to draw people into pissing matches. Either way... not good! I think the video is in response to a relatively small number of members who fall into this category.

There is a great quote from professor Randy Pausch in his Last Lecture. As a recovering jerk myself, I would like to share this:

I was quite an arrogant young man. And I came in to the office and of course it was nine o’clock at night and [professor Van Dam] was there, which is your first clue as to what kind of professor he was. And I come bounding in and you know, I’m just I’m going to save the world. And he put his arm around my shoulders and we went for a little walk and he said:

"Randy, it’s such a shame that people perceive you as so arrogant. Because it’s going to limit what you’re going to be able to accomplish in life".

What a hell of a way to tell somebody “you’re being a jerk.” [laughter] Right? He doesn’t say "you’re a jerk". He says people are perceiving you this way, and the downside is it’s going to limit what you’re going to be able to accomplish.

Well Zach (MT BANJO), I had to do some archived PPH on you to find out why your in this thread and what your motives may actually be. You , by you own admission, post your opinion without reading a thread which is VERY dangerous. Back on 8-5 -2010 . STRINGBREAKER"s "EARL OUTTA TUNE" (ring a bell....)thread where you openly admit having not "had the time"and you said "Maybe missed some stuff" (YA THINK?..).You were slamming us in a lefthanded way actually siding with String Breaker.
13 pages folks..... Read it when got some time if you wanna be informed on here and make accurate accusations.Read "Anti Earl" as well.(LOTS of pages) You'll get to know "why" people post what they do.....................
Well, dare I say, seems like history is repeating itself.
Your certainly entitled to your opinion but you obviously havent read this thread ,nor do you know the definition of a POSER nor do you know ANYTHING about MY character. You could not have read this thread and still made the very mis informed comments you did.
Yeah, its 2PM and I should have already started making files for my students, and finshing projects I have going with other pickers on here BUT....Im forced to keep returning to this thread to defend my character. You wanna know why people behave the way they do on here. Go back into the Archives a couple yrs. Read some very heated threads.(ones with LOTS of pages..Very telling............
Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion but when your WAY off base and selectively make a thread read the way YOU WANT it to with out having all the info, your gonna get called on it.

What I know about the Kidd is that he enjoys passing on knowledge to others - hard-won knowledge that he has accumulated over the years by attending workshops, jam sessions and mentoring by the greats. Not from free online lessons or the latest DVD instructional flavor of the month. That kind of deep knowledge is valuable and it is given free right here, for the asking. Is he impatient with a lot of talking about talking about playing banjo? Probably. Is he passionate about all this? Yes. Nothing wrong with that.

It's not inexperience coupled with having an opinion that makes someone a poser. I believe if that were the only criteria, 98% of the members of the Hangout would be posers.

A poser believes that his/her opinion is correct, despite lack of experience, despite a chorus of those who do have the experience letting them know, hopefully politely at first, that they have made a mistake. Posers expect others to listen to their opinion while refusing to acknowledge the opinions of others, often many others. A poser's opinion usually adds nothing positive to the discussion. Perhaps posers are just plain stubborn. But at some point, an opinion needs to be backed up with something; playing experience, teaching experience, life experience. Otherwise, it is only an empty, ill-informed opinion.

Trolls are another thing entirely. I can point to an excellent example of a troll but it would only feed his idiotic ego.

dustinTN - Posted - 03/29/2011:  11:49:16

For the very few complaining about KIDD's video, let me just say that I have posted some really horrible sound clips of me learning to play the banjo. The KIDD has always been incredibly nice, supportive, and encouraging despite the fact that the sound clips were VERY evident of someone who was just learning and had little skill.

Chill out. It's a great video. In no way, shape, or form is KIDD looking for opportunities to denigrate those of lesser skills. It's the exact opposite - he's been very generous and supportive of newbies if my experience is any indication.

It's time for me to bow out. I view this thread as having the makings now of a "train wreck." To me, the only think worse than being in a TW, is being nearby and watching it happen. By leaving now, I eliminate my risk of being in either situation, should it "occur." The thread has little or no resemblance now to what it was when I first posted it. It's taken on a life of its own; good, bad or indifferent.

On the Contrary Ted. Like "Anti -Earl" and "Earl Outta Tune" it will be history to study in the future. It will give us answers to puzzling present time questions that will undoubtedly need edification and personal character referencing. Hind site IS 20/20.... History... A great teacher!. Ya did good man!!

MTBanjo - Posted - 03/29/2011:  12:25:13

Well KIDD, what motivates me is typically anything I see that I don't think is fair treatment, and then ignorant ideas. That's why I typically post in a thread and that's why I get in trouble a lot. I don't have time to go digging through everybody's posts. I admit when I don't know what I'm talking about.

I've read this thread, have you? Show me where Dan attacks you. Show me in his PPH where he's out to get anyone. I'll admit I did a little searching, but again, I clearly don't have the time, or the indignation you're clearly suffering from because of all the bad treatment you say you're getting. (I won't argue that, because I'm not going to dig through all your posts). But you aren't getting that treatment from anyone but stringbreaker here.

Go ahead and search my life archives, you'll find all sorts of bad stuff! I've said stupid things all my life, and on BHO I have a habit of jumping into threads once they've started to get heated because I see certain people as being out of line, and often I'm not addressing the original point of the thread. I often don't have all the information. Same with anyone who posts in any thread. Oh well. I won't stop or apologize. Not here anyways I'll apologize at the moment, if I did something wrong, but I'm completely fine with my PPH. Go ahead and dig. I'm not a troll and and I don't really care much if people like you or not. Could be I'm reading too much into it, because your posting style is very animated, but you seem so sure people are out to get you that you're attacking someone just for disagreeing. Show me danthebanjoman is out to get you, and I'll admit I'm wrong. I just don't see it. I see a very respectful, adult-like disagreement (from his side, anyway...).

I remember a bit about that earls out of tune thread, and I'll admit stringbreaker needed no defending, but I also remember some of the arguments I heard were what got me going... As in I saw people jumping on him just for having the audacity to claim Earl might be out of tune. There was a good debate from some people, but so much of it just seemed to be "how could you possibly say something bad about Earl??". So yeah, without reading the entire tread, I defended him from that stuff. You're right, people, including myself, shouldn't post, especially in a heated thread, without reading the whole thing first. Even when it's a big multi-page thread. But, we all don't do everything we should have. I won't hold grudges for silly mistakes on an internet forum.

If you want to take my defense of him as a backhanded insult to you, that's your problem. When I post, unless I'm addressing you specifically, I'm not referring to you. If I want to insult you I'll do it directly. But it's really too bad...so many good people who would have otherwise never connected...but the way we're connected makes it really easy to misunderstand and think we don't like people or people don't like us.

So here I am in this thread, because the KIDD express is plowing over someone and accusing him of misrepresenting himself and of trying to take you out, when I just don't see it. I don't spend the time here to know if there's some vast conspiracy to remove the KIDD from BHO, but I doubt it. So I see this thing, this idea as becoming so big in your head, that it's all you can see if someone disagrees with you. I'm not here to make anyone look bad or get rid of anyone. I wanted to wait until I saw the video before I posted, but then you got rolling...Please don't turn the BHO into any more of a "us vs. them" place than it alread is. It's great to call out people who are little more than trolls, and are scaring real players off, but dividing the HO into those categories based on who agrees with you and who doesn't, isn't too cool.

Anyways, that's all for me. If you want get further into, PM me or something so we can stop wasting space on this thread. And if PPH means so much to you, feel free to post our conversation in some other thread so people can see it. Chances are we'd get along and I'd mostly agree with you. But if you want to use my PPH as a way to discredit me on the HO...well, go ahead. People who know me personally know what kind of person I am. In the end I don't care much how I come across on this forum. My heart's always in the right place, even if my head isn't always.

From what I've gathered the video is about, I agree with banjodusters first post. But I don't agree with you going after anyone but stringbreaker.

You married, KIDD? Ever had your wife, or one of your parents, use something you said, whether stupid or not, from months or years ago against you, in a different situation? Don't make the hangout like that. I agree that looking into someone's previous posts can tell you something about them, but don't take it so far. "OH, here on 1.1.09, you said you don't read threads before posting. SO THERE!". Give me a break.

Ill just say that I and probably 99% of the people involved in this thread dont see it your way. I got the E mail to prove it.You have your personna for everyone to see, I have mine. You have your opinion on matters, I have mine.Lets just agree to disagree.

Sounds alright to me. But if dan's a poser or troll, I'd sure like to see your proof, here or through pm.

NOW your baitin me dude!!.. Ive never called ANYONE a poser or troll. There is a post in this thread why I commented on Dans first post the way I did. He attacked my character first hand. Youve got all kinds of proof here that I never referred to the less experienced as Posers.. Alot of newbies have risked coming on here to defend my character and now your slapping them in the face by not akowledging what the TRUE definition of a Poser is. Your obviously here to discredit me and continue to give me cause to defend myself about the unfair characterization of me giving by Dan. If your not seeing that in this thread, then just say so without further attacking me. You here for a fight.. Admit it..Youve got an axe to grind with me.I tried to just agree to "disagree" with you and be done with it.
I told you I dont agree with your accessment. If you continue to hammer me, I will defend myself!!!!
YOU give it a rest and give ME a break.

As an early member of the "Posers, Trolls and Malcontents" group here on the BHO, I think I can say with some confidence that our group approves of the video and its message.

And if we "Posers, Trolls and Malcontents" have no problem with the video, why should anyone else?

We consider it an honor that Kidd's talent was put to use in creating a song with us in mind!
Go Kidd!! As one member put it: "our own theme song!"

I really don't know what axe I would have to grind. Maybe you could find it in my PPH for me? I'm going to read through the thread one last time to see where he's attacking you.

Let me say it for you KIDD- you are an asset to this site. A big one. You and John both and lots of other people who have to deal with members who don't know what they're talking about disagreeing with you on banjo related topics are huge assets to BHO. But I'm sorry, over here, we're all equal. If I see YOU attacking someone for reasons I don't see, I'm going to be just as fast to defend them. I have no axe to grind, nor any reason to discredit you. It's unfortunate that I can't keep my mouth shut when I see this kind of stuff, because if I ever meet you in person, it's going to be weird now, but...that's me. It's the reason my friends appreciate me, and the reason why other people won't ever like me.

But quit playing the victim here. It's getting old.

i dont know dan or mtbanjo. his credibatility ruined because he sided with me on a thread? people reading threads wont see all your posts because mods deleted them. why? kid 99% of people have been wrong lots of time in past.

you were one that told people to be careful of who they support. if they challenge what you or one of your gang members say you team up on them. if you cant defend position you cry posers.
the two johns and now a reply from laurence. how predicatable.

Well, like I keep sayin Zack, I simply dont agree with ya. What part of that dont ya get?...You did what you thought was right.. Cool.. I even pointed it out for ya and still dont see it, We disagree, its just that simple. You obviously cant accept the simple "agree to disagree" concept. Your further posting proves your tryin to convince others your right..Why dont ya let THEM read and make up thier own minds. All Ive done is defend myself against your alls attacks and point out where I think posts do so. You NOT gonna change my mind , Im not gonna change yours.
What are you hoping to gain?.. Im force to stay here and defend myself. You agenda seems to be about Dan to which we totally disagree.. You continuing to beat this proves you have another motive. (We know what it is too dont we gang).
