And the difference between smoking tobacco and using marijuana, heroin, cocaine or meth in your own house is what? Free to buy guns but not free to buy drugs. I too do not understand what the principles are behind many decisions.

I don't get your point, especially in relationship to my post. Even still, you are comparing legal products to illegal ones.
BTW, it has always bothered me that indigenous North Americans couldn't smoke in their own tee pee without being bothered by Europeans. That, I get.

There's always someone telling someone how to live. I don't smoke but if I did, you have the right to move when I light up.

One more thing and then I'm done.... I work part-time since I retired. I do drug and alcohol testing for truck drivers, bus drivers, pilots, etc.... The alcohol testing is conducted with a breathilizer....same machine that law enforcement uses. When I administer the breathilizer people are reguired to blow on a mouthpiece attached to the unit for 2 to 3 seconds. It doesn't require much lung power to produce an adequate air sample. You all would be amazed at how many people cannot blow hard enough to produce enough air for the machine to analyze.... 90% of them are smokers and the others who cannot blow usually have asthma or some other medical problem. It's really sad to see someone try to blow and start coughing and hacking after a couple of seconds, and don't think they are all older people who have smoked for 30 years.... They are not. Some, yes, but many are younger people. I had one young man who was 29 years old who could not blow hard enough... He told me he'd quit smoking about a month earlier because he was coughing up blood. He'd been smoking 2 packs a day since he was about 16...the doctor told him if he didn't quit he'd be dead... 29 years old.

So, anwyays........ Again. To each his own.

Smoking tobacco used to be legal everywhere and now it isn't. I don't see how that is any different than something that has always been illegal but doesn't harm anyone else. If you don't agree, then there is nothing I can say to convince you that human laws are inventions that have little relation to reality or even philosophic principles.

Guns okay,
tobacco sort of okay,
marijuana verboten,
alcohol okay,
homosexuality not okay
marriage between a white woman and black man allowed nowadays but when Obama was born it was illegal in 19 states.

There is no rhyme nor reason to any of this, just tradition and fear.

i concur, none at all. but some good drugs are clearly needed just to accept the reality of this tomfoolery.

Tisk tishk, What about all those people running around with Coffee breath..(whew!)...
What about the ones actually that keep dogs and cats in their house... Especially the cat urine smell, permeates everything about them! Set down to eat in a public place and there they are in the next setting place, and all you smell is cat Pi#$..
Ban breathing??????? Or pets????

As horrific as the illegal drug trade is.... Its not a drop in the bucket compared to the 'Legal' drug trade.. Go to the doctor, he tells you to quit everything... Then sells you a bunch of drugs, that are far worse and incredibly expensive......???:
Ban living???

Everyone should just relax. Go out for a smoke, jog or whatever and come back and read all these posts. Too funny...... Some how native americans and their rights got involved ? hitler made a cameo appearance! and everyone who smokes was going to jail or better yet be placed in front of a firing squad. Or news flash all the anti smokers drive cars. Too funny keep the posts comin! What was the subject again? Gun control? Never mind don't want to ignite that firestorm

Tobacco is a sacrament to some indigenous people on North America so it would never be made illegal for them...I think I'll go eat some peyote.

mr magoo - Posted - 02/23/2011:  14:49:09

No kidding really? Their land (or reservations) are also considered sovereign meaning if we pass a law like outlawing tobacco it would not apply to them.

40 year smoker here, agree with alot of whats been said, but, i never will agree with no smoking in a bar! btw, how do you think our old instruments got their sound? stale beer and cig smoke!

jfjohnsto - Posted - 02/23/2011:  18:29:00

I stopped at a rest stop in Iowa recently that had a sign posted saying no smoking unless you were in your car with the windows up. Right behind me were several trucks idling, putting out more smoke than my cigar ever would. Made a lot of sense. It's about control, not health.

well, they're all addictive (but i'm going to exclude marijuana from the "dope" label here...)

and all can kill ya (the substances themselves).

some just inhibit your ability to function more so than others....

and some are just "more socially accepted" than others... regardless of one's personal perception....

What people do don't bother me none either until it's someone near and dear to me... A great guy who ranched south of me died not too long ago from dipping snuff... First they removed part of his jawbone, then they took his chin out. Then they cut out his tongue.... He was 61 years old. I suspect his wife and 4 kids were bothered some by the snuff he dipped.

Speaking of cars, there were several brush fires last week in NC and VA due to dry and windy conditions and it seems many were started by "buttheads" tossing their cigarettes out of their vehicle windows. Maybe smoking should be banned in all vehicles including private ones since some cannot act responsibly with their leftover cigarettes?
Yeah I know it won't happen and I am really not saying to do that but sheeeze.
Don't throw a lit cigarette out of your vehicle window.
That's just plain d-u-m-b.

Ronnie - Posted - 02/24/2011:  16:48:29

Some cars nowadays don't even come with ash trays! If you smoke buy an aftermarket ashtray or keep an empty soda can or whatever in your vehicle. We have had some grass and brush fires in our area, too, likely caused by careless smokers.

well,
iv'e read this whole thread........

my history...i usta smoke bout a pack a day....and i chewed.....never spit tho..
quit bout 16 years ago.

gave it up cause i thought that ,that was the right thing to do...and Liz don't smoke..

however,..i to this day still love tobacco...

so i think i'm qualified to give a fair to everyone solution.....one that will affect smokers and nonsmokers equaly...........

just make breathing and life on this planet illeagle.....

illeagle is a sick bird...probly caused by hot exhaled human breath.....

i'm waitin for someone to come out with the statement that if a smoker has a pet ....(whatever)..that breaths air....

well, hang 'em for animal crulty.

if i wanna smoke, drink,or yes even fart....if it aint buggin you then leave me ,..alone.

i love the old joke,..

Mind if i smoke?

No,....mind if i fart?

thank you George Carlin............

I AM NOT saying your making this up. But I have for years heard the stories of people who lost half their face etc. and it was always somecbody , who somebodys fiend knew or something.
For sure there have been cases , but if you do some research , smokelesss is no where near as dangerous as smoking.
If you want to really see, check our Swedens stats,,, when they started using snuss rather than smoking.
Im not saying its good for you ,,, its just nowhere as bad as smoking
from the research Ive done YMMV

We got a restaurant and bar ban here too. I was opposed to it not because I think smokers have any right to smoke where they want. Rather just based on I believe in the free market system. I believe it should be the bar's decision. No one has to go to a bar or restaurant. The customer is free to decide if they want to go to a smoky bar or one that is smoke free. If the business believes smoking keeps more customers away, they can adopt a non-smoking. Just as a business should be free to have banjo music or not, the customer can decide if they want to go to the place, or avoid the place, or tolerate the place that has banjo music.

I think folks also go too far concerning smoking outdoors, at say a festival or park. Not talking about when standing right next to them and you you can't (or shouldn't have to) move, like sitting/standing in the audience watching the show. Rather in a big open space, 10 yards away. Might get a wisp of tobacco smell. Or in the parking lot or campground. The non-smoker can easily move, or ask the smoker to move. Funny that some complain, but have no problem standing around a campfire breathing in all that smoke.

Then way too far when it comes to the smell of smoke - the smoker is not smoking, just smells like smoke. Do we need a law for that? As pointed out, there are all sorts of non-smoke smells that might bother folks, perfume, BO, garlic and onions, bad breath, pot, alcohol, coffee, cough drops, cooking, paint, gas and oil (from working on a car), sawdust, and campfire. I'm not sure how one's health would be affected by smell. I don't know if it's the actual smell that's annoying either. Someone smells like campfire, and and folks aren't overly annoyed, but smell a little like tobacco and they get all worked up about it. But why not just use normal social interaction to govern this?

minstrelmike - Posted - 03/02/2011:  14:44:05

The reason they stopped the smoking in bars and restaurants was for the workers.

I remember working in office bldgs where people smoked and it was bad.
My old banjo case still smells like smoke from weekly gigs at bars.

Not letting you kill yourself in your own ways is rather over-bearing because I have my own preferences, but I'm glad the smokers are outside now.

I agree on some , however I will be ole andrew what's his face on this one. The medical proffession has proven some facts about smoking, that aren't in any of these categories. The medical profession will agree, if honest about it, that smoking keeps the brain cells active and prolongs altzimers. But they sure don't recomend it to noone. After all the cigarete mfg, has gone under, what next? Choc was bad , now good etc. No harm intended but it can get a lot worse.

I am with Nancy and Ronnie on this one. Not everything is caused by cigarete smoke and old age alone can result in having to change diapers on a loved one, but it is called life. Todays activists and preventing this , that , and the other ain't getting it. The cards will be dealt accordingly and how one plays them out is up to them, not everyone else. It is sad to think some can avoid something they really enjoy in life and go out and get run over by a car or shot dead and didn't ever get that last little thing they enjoyed because they were afraid it would kill them. Duh?Micki

I suppose the smokers here won't mind having family members change their diapers towards the end. I'd like to avoid that prospect as long as possible by not doing anything really stupid.

Second hand smoke triggers auto-immune disease in me. I avoid it like the plague. Steroids to deal with auto-immune disease have given my eyes too many cataracts already.

Down state Illinois isn't like the rest of the state. The no smoking laws aren't always enforced down there
which means, when I go down there I don't eat out = I don't put my money into the local economy.

The strange part of it though, those buying cigarettes always look like the least to be able to afford the luxury.
That's just an observation.

Opoinionated? You bet.

Now I have had to change my husbands diapers. He had a massive stroke. Not from cigarettes...but a stroke from stress!

If you folks don't agree...make the ones that smoke lose all their rights. That ought to cure the problem? You can put all the smokers in jail. That ought to teach them to obey you.

Soon you too will lose some of your rights. We all will. You must judge others? Good grief.

Now about a dozen of you can do my job here. You gotta take care of an invalid 24/7s. You gotta build a cabin. You gotta run errands for all the seniors and invalids that need to go somewhere. You gotta take meals to shutins, you gotta go to see the sick and comfort them. You gotta play taxi free when you get a phone call to do so. You gotta be pleasant to everyone ALL the time. You gotta be on call for anyone in need. You gotta keep the house clean as a pin, do shopping, keep a small store at home, cook three meals a day...and don't do leftovers. You gotta cut up food for those that can't and make it so they can eat. You have to clean up runs and caca in clothes or thow them out. You gotta mow the grass, or shovel snow. You gotta let dogs in and out and take care of them. You gotta sweep and clean the porches and deck. You gotta wash clothes. You gotta give baths. You gotta give meds when needed. You gotta take invalid ladies shopping and take care of them and find what they need. You gotta put in windows and doors. You gotta mend anything broken. You only get a few hours sleep and that's not all at once. So..you stay up nights to take care of others.

That is what I do. Follow me if you can and tell me what I can and can't do.

Make me obey your rules.

I do all this and a few hundred other things. Want my job?

I'd ask the smokers here that defend their smoking, if you could go back in time and change that one thing about yourself and then step back into today would you?

Believe it or not, I quit smoking in 1957. (!)

I had smoked 5 years and was smoking 2 packs a day when I quit. I quit "cold turkey" and never smoked again.
The physical craving went away in 2 or 3 days. Then my brain took over; thoughts about how good a smoke tasted after a meal, I felt less self-conscious when with other people, etc, etc.
I switched to another habit, chewing toothpicks. For a number of years I constantly had a toothpick in my mouth. Now I may chew one or two a day.

One time at work (I was a lab tech at the time), a buddy was getting on me about the toothpicks. He said he knew a guy who accidentally swallowed a toothpick. It was giving him pain so he went to a doctor. They did x-rays, and told him they would have to operate. The guy didn't want surgery, so he got rid of the toothpick. I asked my buddy how the guy solved his problem. He told me, "He just swallowed a couple of termites and they took care of it." I believed him until he dropped the punch line on me.....
