First, I want to say that i like the new groups feature, but there is one thing that worries me a bit and that is: Is there a possibility that theives or other undesirables will be able to find out all about our instruments, where we live and then plan a robbery? I have noticed that some of the groups that are being formed are for people living in specific states or areas. We are discussing our banjos or in some cases banjo collections. A crook could just join BHO to access our groups, find out where we live and then simply check a telephone book to get our address. Maybe I am being too paranoid. It's not like I have a bunch of prewars sitting around but I love what I got. Should we be careful about putting too much personal info out there for anybody to see?![]()

Wiil,
Just because you are paranoid does not mean that there isn't someone out to get you . . .

Put your trust in God, and get an addendum on your homeowners covering your banjos.![]()
Seriously, though, don't think your homeowners insurance will automatically cover you, its usually just a flat dollar amount for musical instruments, jewelry, guns, etc, unless you have a rider on each. I found out the hard way years ago on my guns and jewelry.![]()

I live a few hundred feet off the main road.
You can't see my house from the road and any thief or other kind of bum wouldn't know
who was here or if someone would drive in before he/they could get away.
I'm home a lot,these days and I keep well-oiled guns.
Not highly collectible, but in great working order.
All my neighbors are gun owners, too.
I've never heard of a robbery or home invasion here around Port Clyde.
I don't think that kind of stuff would fly around here.

actually i live 300 ft plus off the road and woods all around. They robbed me between 10:30am and noon on a snowy day in Feb. My son left for school at 10am and I came by for lunch at just after 12. They kicked in the back door, found all my guns and lots of other stuff and left thru the woods behind me. My neighbors, all gun owners, never saw or heard a thing.![]()

Daughter's guitar was stolen by a burglar and I located it at a local pawn shop. My area is full of thieving crack heads. The internet doesn't scare me that much.

??? I know that I'm old fashioned but I see this group thing as a factor in continuing the segregation and degredation of the HO... Kinda like some of the facebook stuff and dating games .... But no one is gonna steal here, because of it...

It is a concern.
It's more of a concern on FaceBook and MySpace where folks can just pay attention to some of your posts to know where you live (many of the burglars are teen-agers and have lots of 'friends') and they'll watch for you to post vacation pix from Cancun and know you ain't home.
There's another scam reported in Denver where folks in Nigeria scan house sales to look for low-priced long-listed properties they think are empty and then they 'rent' those to folks. The renters are out the money, not you. The 'landlord' needs to rent it as is because he had to leave on a business trip to Nigeria. Some 'tenants' have broken in when they couldn't find the key the landlord left.

There is no such thing as privacy. As EggeRidgeBoy noted all it takes is a simple internet search. If you are a member of any on-line social group you're name and address are easy to get. As regards thieves and deterrents I recently had burglars steal all four wheels off my son's car, go into my garage through the side door not 10 feet from the back door, and steal a large Honda generator. The cops and I figure they did all this in from 4 to 10 minutes and left no traces. The flood lights didn't bother them. These thieves are professionals who take orders and fill them just like a legitimate business. You have to buy insurance separately for your instruments and some insurance companies won't carry them at all. You can ask your agent and see what he says about a musical instrument rider on your house policy. Otherwise you're left with your guns and hope you hear them when they come about 3 in the morning. If you hear or see someone around your place call 911 and wait for the cops. It isn't worth the risk to get involved in a shootout... unless they're trying to steal your banjo... then all bets are off.

Dig a hole in the yard. 3'x7'x 6' deep. Put a blank stone, 2'x3' at one end with a note "Your name please" taped to it. Make it visible to anybody that would try to break in. Leave a few empty gun shells nearby.

As a police officer I would suggest that the chance of your everyday thief scanning banjo hangout to find people who live in the vicinity and have instruments of a high enough value to make it worthwhile stealing are slim to none.
Not many thieves have an intimate knowledge of the value of banjos and unless you own a one of a kind banjo that is being stolen to order then again your chances of being targeted are slim.
If you do get broken in to and your banjo stolen I would suggest it was more a case of your house looked like the easiest target and the banjo was in a place where it could easily be seen and taken.
I would suggest that you mark your banjo in some way that is not easily seen by any would be thief and then if it is ever found it can be traced back to you.

Reminds me of the story about the guy who left his banjo on the back seat of his car, parked on the street in NY city, while he went shopping. When we got back to his car, he notice the back window broken out, so he rushed to the car, expecting to find his banjo stolen. Instead, he found two banjos on the back seat!![]()

Should not be any more of a problem than that caused by our listing of instruments and who we are, etc. on the members info provided on our homepage. If it is, I have a house full of furry friends as well as Colts that are excellent deterents.

I keep nothing of great or even small value in my home. If theves broke into my home they would take one look around and have pity on me then show up the next day donating stolen goods...
If my guitars and banjos were stolen it would give me a good reason to build more.
Folks who have lots of valuable possessions never sleep at night, I sleep real good...Bob...

You can break into my house anytime you wish --- but you will never break-out I have the best armed guard that money can buy!
