Yes, the site does belong to Eric, and it must be a really tough job to keep it going - thanks to him, this is the only place to come if you're really interested in banjo playing, and not finding amusement in making hurtful remarks (as has been complained about) to other members.
I see the same thing. However, complaining about the mods is against the rules. Even complaining publicly about the rules is against the rules. You can send Eric a pm but you cannot have an open discussion.
To me that's worse than censorship but this is the easiest place to meet aspiring pickers so I try to ignore the discrepancies between desire and action.

This isn't true. What gave you this idea?
It's not against the rules to complain about the rules. And it's only against the rules to question a moderator's specific actions (like "I don't think you should have deleted this guy's blog entry.") This is a pretty common rule on message boards, btw.
The rules clearly state this: Posts Questioning a Moderator's Specific Actions: If you disagree with a moderator's actions, contact them or the site owner (Eric Schlange at
eric@banjohangout.org). Please note that discussion of overall site policies is allowed, and should generally be placed in the "Improvements and Suggestions" forum.

I can say truthfully that I have posted a response in jest and it turned into a dadburn free for all. Everyone took it out of context and the polarity of opinions rose to the surface. Apologizing for not thinking it through before posting only made it worse. Some folks just don't share the same sense of humor as others. I think it's a good idea to have the moderators watching for these things and keeping them under control. After all we're mostly here for the same reasons, discussing banjo's in their various aspects, music in general, socializing and sharing ideas in non-related sections. No need to throw civility to the wind whenever we disagree a bit.

I am here to make friends and learn from them to make me a better player there are some great people on here and some that like to start trouble which you will have with this many people on the site hopefully they will see there evil ways and turn over a new leaf or choose to leave or get the BOOT whichever.

This is the easiest place in the world to follow the rules and anyone with a gripe can move along if they feel this isn't what they want. What else is there to consider? I don't want to discuss religion or politics on here. This is a worn out discussion I believe. I got thrown off a banjo site because of politics so it seems that doesn't work so well. This place is the best. There is a reason all the folks who have their own sites are still on here.

I kind of like a family-friendly environment. I also choose to be here. I can always drop out if I choose. Moderators do what they do to the best of their ability and judgment. My old adage: If I don’t like the movie, I leave the theater.

I've been giving this some thought in the light of some the more measured responses i recieved to my post. Whilst I do think that this policy does limit the freedom of speech of some of the more adventurous and entertaining members of this site I do see how the moderation policy generally makes the hangout a very civilised place to be. Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to my little gripe in an intelligent way.

I didn't understand that, thank you for the clarification. Okay, since we now have that cleared up, I think the rule about not being able to question a mod's specific action sucks.

I just had a post deleted a day or so ago, I don't know which rule I broke or who did it. I wasn't notified, it just disappeared. But I'm NOT questioning the decision, mind you, I'm sure the mod had good reasons. The deletion came right after I posted it. I must be on the watch list!

It's called profiling and saves a lot of time. Of course, there is still the occasional personal attack or name-calling or most dreaded of all, the ALL CAPS post inserted by some newbie but profiling is essentially playing the odds.

I have read this thread with interest. I make two comments:
Censorship and rules for the smooth running of an organisation are not the same thing. Censorship is political, judgmental and is about suppression and is emotive. Having a policy which, say, forbids political opinion in a particular forum is not, per se, censorship. As has been ably argued by many here, a political opinion can be freely expressed in the appropriate place. Think of it as banning miners from taking matches underground - the rule doesn't forbid the miner being a smoker. The important point is that the rule has a non-political purpose.
On the thread re limiting editing to 15 minutes I also stated what a civil forum this is compared to others but ask an unanswered question: are removals of posts by moderators indicated by the poster's avatar remaining with a brief reason for removal alongside? If not, would such a practice also aid civility?

Hate to see you go Nick. How about we remember why you joined and put aside a non-related forum issue because, it's non-related. It's a surprise to me to find this thread since I just logged on to delete a post I made yesterday to a non-related forum. The issue is important to me, but it doesn't belong here, so I'm taking my post down and looking for all the other things on this site that I like. You're not hurting anyone by leaving and can that spirit of the internet baloney. The internet was not created for folks to spout and sputter about whatever and then get miffed because they're on the wrong site for their topic. Play the banjo Nick and find a more appropriated venue for more controversial topics.

I don't think I am the only one to conflate these two threads. There are overlaps in the two discussions which suggest either some people going off topic - myself included - or else there is a need for a new discussion thread about rules and etiquette.
I think Eric's rules are clear and concise making the forums civilised places. And everyone is free to contribute suggestions they think would improve the BHO. A re-iteration and regular review of etiquette would not I think be remiss in any of the forums.
