Hello my name is Scott and am a beginner, I picked up this very nice GoldStar GF-85 with hard-case some frosting worn off the skin from playing other than that a very nice clean banjo no scratches and in great shape with railroad spikes installed I thought I wanted to learn Scruggs style bluegrass but after a lot of research I now am leaning really hard into learning Clawhammer and would like a nice Open Back for clawhammer that I can grow with and won't have to buy another one a year or two down the road (Would like a really good quality one). I can put some money with what I have for the right banjo but think I can get something nice in trade for this. I will send pics upon request. Thanks for your time!

Consider converting your Gold Star. Here's a GF-85 I did a few years ago:

Is this something I can do or does someone on this forum convert them? Thanks!

I, too, did the conversion to open back from a GS 85. Great sounding banjo. Sounds like a tubaphone. Just buy a bracket flange for about $85 and shipping from Bill Rickard in Canada. Easy to do. You'll like it.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I will convert it then!

So if you do this conversion on your gf-85 will it be loud enough for scruggs style? I just happen to have a goldstar gf-85 I may want to convert too.

thanks,

Debbie
