Hello everyone:
I just noticed that Steve Huber has brought back the Vintage Series banjo's. He is including the new Huber HR tone ring and the new shell on these banjos.
They should be great sounding and playing banjo's and thought you might want to look into them.
Here is the link.

Dave regardless of value they are all just banjos. Of what value is an unplayed instrument? Jack

The only thing I really don't care for is the "Truetone" block, I like the original " Vintage" that came on the first of that series. I do like the double cut pegheads. When I placed my order in 06, I was expecting a reproduction of my old style 75 inlays and peghead shape, and a heavier weight tone ring, but somehow all that got misunderstood in the order..Nice banjos though..glad to see he can now offer the classic shapes

Well, this is about as close as you can get to owning a prewar Gibson 5 string without paying $100k+. These look incredible and I would imagine sound just as good. The only thing missing is Gibson on the headstock, a Mastertone block in the neck and 75 years. I think going back to the original double cut headstock is a great move and they will sell like hotcakes on the higher end market. I guess they are no longer worried about litigation by Gibson. I still think Gibson should license the rights to Steve to produce their banjos. Maybe he's not interested.

Really? Two of my banjo students own/play banjos that cost considerably more. Not meaning to offend . . . I just think this arbitrary and silly.

"I just noticed that Steve Huber has brought back the Vintage Series banjo's. He is including the new Huber HR tone ring and the new shell on these banjos."
Maybe Steve knows something we don't about the short-term (or even long-term) future for gen-u-ine Gibson banjo production.
These new instruments look great. Huber quality combined with traditional Gibson styling is a winner. What more could one ask for?
But watch out! Tom Mirasola isn't all that far behind with his "affordable" banjo line.
Looks like these two guys have their eyes on cornering the market!

Hi I've got a recently purchased VRB4. I don't know how to upload photos. it is beautiful. But, I'm about sound, and it is awesome. I just sent it back to Huber because he wanted to make some recordings with it. I'll get him to post some when he's done. It picks up a voice from 6 ft away right out of the box. I heard a prototype side by side with an original flathead and it was very close and this one is better. I'll get a chance to hear a side by side test soon. I'm thoroughly satisfied with the banjo. Intonation is great also. I forgot to mention it's an HR30 with the engineered rim.

That is the one during IBMA that drew rave reviews from all that played it........A friend here in Indianapolis, CW Munde wanted that one bad, but you had already spoken for it......
Some guy by the name of Mills.........commented about how close the sound was to the Snuffy Jenkins original banjo. Mills is a Huber fan obviously, but he does not blow smoke to any one. You got a great banjo.

My son Russ is playing one of Steve's prototype Vintage banjos, kind of a mahogany transition model that has the old Vintage block but also the new tone ring and rim. I suppose it was one of the first of this new series or one of Steve's test mules as he was developing them, Russ got it in early 2010. Its quite a machine is all I'll say, he's really happy with it and I'm impressed as well. He quit playing the walnut banjo I built for him.... He's playing banjo with Audie Blaylock and Redline, so if you run into them somewhere ask him to check it out and I'm sure he would be happy to let you pick a few on it to see what you think.
Shimdog - Posted - 12/03/2010: 10:51:46
I think it speaks volumes that in a tough economy where other dealers at IBMA seemed to struggle to move instruments, Huber sold 6 banjos including the 5 Truetones he brought with him (I think my numbers are accurate). It is amazing how good they sound even brand new. I can't imagine how good they will sound as they continue to open up from being played. There was a gold plated VRB-G at IBMA that opened up in just 2 days of people test driving it. The VRB-4 that howdydoody51 bought probably was the best of the bunch, but that VRB-G was closing in when I last played it. Congrats to those who have bought any of them.
howdydoody51 - Posted - 12/03/2010: 15:02:11
Hey Guys, I phoned Huber out of the blue to ask him about an eBay banjo. He answered his phone while at IBMA. Over the years Steve has never BS'ed me one bit and the walnut banjo came to his mind first and I could tell he was jazzed about it so I said "put my name on it"
I'm glad to read that others have tried it. I'm in the sticks of upper NY where no one will hear it. But as I said earlier Steve now has it to record with. He also kept it a while to do more tests on the rim. I used my line of credit to buy it and now I've got to pay for it, but no regrets. If any body want to try it in Steve's shop it's ok with me.

Steve has a style 75 truetone that is available right now no wait that is killer also. It would make a good Christmas gift
Majorbanjo - Posted - 12/04/2010: 13:29:24
Wow....that is a nice looking 75 truetone......it's on Huberbanjo website in the available now section.....
OSCAR82AA - Posted - 12/04/2010: 15:01:11
MAJORBANJO THANKS FOR THAT ENLARGED PICTURE.
THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL THING RIGHT THERE.
Majorbanjo - Posted - 12/04/2010: 16:29:01
I agree....it looks like a nickel mills model to me........I prefer a nickel banjo......That would be the banjo I'd get if I were in the market for a new Huber.......the only option I'd add would be the wide neck option........like is standard on the shelor and ron block models.....
Darcy - Posted - 12/04/2010: 16:33:22
I'm surprised Huber hasn't "relic'd" these like Fender and Gibson has. Wear some of the nickel... dent and scratch up the neck and the back of the resonator, put on a scratched head. I wonder what the market would be.
Those sure are beautiful though.

There is a difference in antiqued and relic'd......antiqued knocks the shine off.......relic'd knocks the finish off........Huber "antiques" he doesn't "relic"....at least as far as I know.....
Shimdog - Posted - 12/06/2010: 12:06:40
Maybe it's just me, but I prefer the "antiqued" look a banjo gets after 5-10+ years of playing rather than something done to it cosmetically when new. That way the banjo and its owner earn that wear together in a wonderful way.
lethegoodtimesroll - Posted - 12/06/2010: 15:36:05
its hard to believe that Huber could make his Banjos sound even better..but with the Truetone series he has.
Jim Mills could endorse any Banjo currently being made..he chose Huber. My Huber does everthing well.....but I think there is a Truetone in my future![]()
howdydoody51 - Posted - 12/07/2010: 11:54:48
mine stays in tune like crazy. Not one note on the whole finger board craps out.
DIV - Posted - 12/07/2010: 20:32:48
I'm very impressed...BUt the only thing I would have done differently is to use stump wood on the 4 instead of burl on the reso back...
DIV - Posted - 12/07/2010: 22:07:19
by the way, does anyone know who's hardware Steve used on his banjos? Prucha? First Quality? his own???
Steven M - Posted - 12/07/2010: 23:49:38
I agree with an earlier post that the 'Truetone' block does not look so great.
A wide neck for me and I would be in heaven.
Would have to hear it first of course!

Interesting that this thread is in the "collector's corner" and not in the "shopping advice"...suggesting maybe (like Jim Mills suggested) that Huber banjos will the the "collectible" banjo in years to come. I have a feeling that Steve Huber intends to keep his production of these Truetone Vintage banjos relatively low...?
howdydoody51 - Posted - 12/09/2010: 05:23:59
Hey DIV,
Is that your reso? Some day I'll learn to post pictures. I wanted a banjo that sounded great that didn't cost an arm and a leg. The trouble is, I like my vRB4 ,and now feel as possessive of it as my prewar conversions.
I can't wait to hear the recordings Steve is making with it. I'm a hack , but Steve can pull out tone. I do know one thing, You don't have to look for a sweet spot on it. It's everywhere. I appreciate this since I'm left handed.

Howdy Howdydoody51....
Congratulations on choosing the Huber VRB-4. You could not have picked (no pun intended) a better banjo.
I just pulled the trigger on the Huber VRB-75 and Steve will be recording with it over the next few days before shipping to me. After he updates the website with all of the sound clips, it will be interesting to hear the the tonal differences between the 3, 4 & 75.
Looking forward to hearing your 4 on the website.

Hi Allen, Was that the one shown a few replies back? Let me know what you think when you get it. If you discover the recordings ,I'll bet a lot of people will want to hear them.

Prewargranada - Posted - 12/09/2010: 19:50:23
Dean:
As far as I know, this is the same banjo that was put on this thread by MajorBanjo on 12/4. It's a standard VRB-75 except the neck on this particular banjo is a little smaller than usual, which I like.
I imagine Steve will be doing quite a bit of recording in the next few days and the results will be put on the website as soon as they are edited. If I get any soundbytes sooner, I'll let you know.
BTW...isn't he suppose to record your banjo as well ?
Allen
howdydoody51 - Posted - 12/10/2010: 04:06:09
Allen, Yes and I can't wait to hear it. I. of course have played it live, but now that I've had it a bit and tightened the head as it settled, Steve will probably give it the tweaking it needs. There is no question about when a banjo leaves Steve's hand it sounds better. I hope some day to hear a mahog and a maple.

Hey DIV,
That is a beautiful piece of wood. I'm cracking up over your last few words "got to be strong".
Wait for the recordings. I'm wondering where and how they will show up. I can't wait for the day I can say "That's my boy!" Too bad I live up by Canada, I'd have to cross the St Lawrence River to find another picker. I might winter in the south just to get banjo lessons.

Hey Howdydoody:
You state you live in Canada. So do I. I am in Toronto but Ian Perry a friend of mine (you will find him in the Banjo newsletter as he writes the exploring the fingerboard column) lives in Moncton.
You might try giving him a call about lessons if you are in that neck of the woods.
Here is his website link: ianperry.ca/ianperryFNL.html

Yes, there are several excellent recordings of the Huber VRB-3 already on the website. However, we were referring to upcoming recordings of the Huber VRB-4 and VRB-75 models. Hopefully they will be on the website in the near future.

Hi Dean:
I spoke with Jim (at Huber) on Tuesday and apparently they had to cancel the recording session because of bad weather. He did mention something about trying it again this week, weather permitting, but I asked him to go ahead and send my VRB-75 and I would loan it to Steve at Banjothon in January.
Does he have your banjo right now?

Allen,
yes. I have half a chance of traveling south in Jan. I've never been to Banjothon. What do I need to know? What kind of banjos are allowed? It would be a real chance to do some comparison. Is that your interest?

the amber tuner buttons look good on that banjo. Overall it appears similar to the Lancaster.
