let's not forget the up-and-coming Frank Fairfield...
He may be young, but plays with more feeling than most established banjo vets. Saws one hell of a haunting fiddle too!

You will note that she plays a custom made 6-string banjo (not a guitjo) which has an extra low string between what would normally be the 5th and 4th strings.

She plays a little ch on her album. Nothing crazy, but for folks such as myself (<---the not so talented variety) it is nice to occasionally here some songs that don't blow my mind but still sound nice. :)

It's great to hear about so many wonderful clawhammer players, and while Grandpa Jones was around awhile ago, and folks like Frank Fairfield are doing a good job at older styles, I'm interested in early banjo recordings as well. (e.g. 20's and 30's 78 rpm recordings) So far I've been enjoying Dock Walsh, Charlie Poole, and the very wonderful Chubby Parker. Anyone know of any other semi-forgotten clawhammer players from before WWII?

I don't know if I'd call them semi-forgotton or even strictly clawhammer but I'd throw in Thaddeus C. Willingham, Dick Burnett, Frank Jenkins, Clarence Ashley, Pete Steele, and McKinley Asher.

Wait, hold on, scratch all that. I just scanned to see if I was just repeating names that had been said and noticed that nobody has even mentioned my on of my favorite banjo players ever and somebody I think any banjo picker should check out:

I recently heard John Herrman at Clifftop. He is really fabulous. He plays banjo to compliment the band and fiddle, not to show what he can really do. I hope to hear more of his playing.
Also as you may already know I am always ready to listen to Banjo Billy Mathews. Ghost of Banjo Billy cd is all banjo and original tunes, some tunes are played on the big JB Schall banjo, a real treat to the ears.
