Hi All,

The Portland Old Time Music Gathering is rolling around again January 13-17, 2010. The schedule for this year's event just got posted:

Tons of great music and dancing!

On Thursday night of the gathering I'll be hosting an old time jam at the Moon & Sixpence pub with my good friends Lisa Ornstein and Joe Moore. Lisa and Joe are both great fiddlers, so it should be a lot of fun.

If any of you are coming to town for the gathering, it would be great to meet and maybe play a few tunes together. I'll probably host a house party one of the evenings after the scheduled events. I'll let visitors know about that once I figure out which night.

Scott, that looks like mucho-fun. I am SO tempted to go. Just a short plane ride from Tucson.

Unfortunately, I'm going to be busy working on Excel 2010 books during that time period. But it's only for a few days. Maybe I can get my priorities in order and do it anyway. I lived in Portland for a brief unemployed time of my life. It would be fun to take another look at the place.

I will put this on the back burner and see if I can make it happen.

Also, the Olympia Old Time Music Festival is coming up in February. The schedule for that has now been posted to http://www.olyoldtime.org/ That will be another good time!

Hi All,

POTMG is coming up next week! I'm going to be hosting the Seattle Subversive Square Dance Society for a house square dance and picking party after te POTMG Friday night concert (Jan 15). The party will start at 11:00pm and go late. I'm planning on hosting jamming at my place Friday afternoon before the POTMG concert as well. Shoot me an email if you're coming into town and want directions.

Man, I walked into the Norse Hall on Saturday and thought I took a wrong turn and wandered into a banjo builders convention. One whole wall of the hall was lined with tables full of banjos! John Bowlin, Jason Romero, Brooks Masten, Colin Vance, Nate Calkins, and Doc were all there with banjos on display. J.P. Harris was there, too, but sans banjos. I was too busy visiting with folk and recovering from the after-hours party I hosted the night before, so didn't get around to checking out any of the banjos before they cleared the hall for the evening dance. But it was pretty cool to see them all lined up.

Hi Tom,

I can provide a bit more of my weekend experience:

Tuesday night I went down to the County Cork to see the Rising Phoenix
Society. There were already several folk from out of town there, so got in
some good visiting and listening.

Wednesday night the dance floor at the Spare Room was packed with two-
steppers and country swingers for the Caleb Klauder Country Band, including
me and my wife. I got to meet BHO member Nancy Michaelson (articpoppy)
who came down from Alaska. There were so many out-of-town festival friends
in town already that we spontaneously arranged for an afternoon jam at my
place the next day. I think I got home to bed around 2:00am that day.

Thursday afternoon the afore-mentioned jam got going in my kitchen around
1:00pm. Several friends from the San Francisco Bay Area and one from San
Diego showed up. Grew to about 8-10 folk, but stayed in the kitchen the whole
time. I had to leave at 5:30 to meet my co-hosts for the Moon & Sixpence jam,
so just left them there jamming. Somehow a fresh bottle of Jameson's became
empty by the end of the afternoon. (Not by me, since I needed to host the
public jam that evening).

Thursday evening Lisa Ornstein, Joe Moore, and I hosted a POTMG jam at the
Moon & Sixpence pub. I think there were 1.5 - 2 dozen people playing. We played
D tunes for four hours straight without a break and still left lots on the table.
We ended around 11pm, but then some friends started wandering in from the
square dance that had been going on elsewhere that evening, so I sat down
in a smaller jam and played from around 12-2am, when they turned on the
house lights to give us the hint to leave. I was tired and knew I had to host
a party Friday, so I went home. But I heard that the Thursday night house party
was packed and went until five or six in the morning.

Friday I hosted another afternoon jam at my house. This one got busier. There
were probably six jams going on around the house. The omelette's we had
planned to make for a late breakfast turned out to be scrambled eggs and
country potatoes for a crowd around 3pm. Folk started drifting off to the POTMG
concert around 6pm. I ended up skipping that, but heard that it was good.
I was kind of bummed to miss the Macrae Sisters, cause I really like them. Then
folk started showing up at my place again around 11pm for the square dance
party with Rabbit Stew from Seattle. They got about 3 or 4 squares going in
the living room and jams going pretty much everywhere else in the house
including the upstairs hall, laundry room, and bathroom. The dance went on
until around 3 or 4am. Picking went on until 5am. There was another house
party that night and I heard it was pretty much the same deal there, minus the
dancing.

Saturday I was dog tired. I got down to Norse Hall and spent most of the day
wandering around drinking coffee and visiting with friends from near and far.
I went to the Frank Fairfield and Haints concerts and enjoyed both. There were
jams going on pretty much everywhere including three in the bar and at least
a half dozen in the cafeteria. The group dinner provided by Leroy's Familiar
Vittle's gave me much needed relief. The evening square dances were crowded,
hot, happy, and rocking! There were three open house parties that evening and
at least a couple of private parties, so people spread out more and the parties
were all a little mellower. My son hosted one so I went there. Ended up being
two or three dozen twenty-somethings there and me. I played tunes with some
of the Nettle Honey band from Seattle from about 12-3am. They busted out a
square dance in the dining room for about an hour and a half while we were
playing. They also had another jam going on downstairs. I think I got
home to bed around 5am.

Sunday afternoon we went to the caberet and chilled out. That's sort of like an
open mike that festival goers can sign up for a couple tunes each. You always
hear some great stuff there. Later that evening around 9:30 I went down to
the Moon & Sixpence again to hear Foghorn Stringband and visit with whoever
was still hanging around. The place was packed. Had a great time visiting.
Foghorn plays in a corner at the front of the bar, so around 11pm some young
folk formed up a band and started a square dance in a dart room at the back of
the bar. I jumped in for a dance and had a great time. I hung out til 2am.
I knew I would hate myself in the morning (since I had to work the next day),
but I was having too much fun to leave.

I guess I got a little long there, but that may give you a bit of the flavor of what
the POTMG is like.

Wow! You'd better check into the Old Time Intensive Care Unit to make sure you are still o.k. If I ever make it up there I'll be sure to beef up a month before on adrenal support and come armed with chocolate-covered coffee beans. What a feast! Good OnYa! TC

Mark's a taper and recorded a bunch of the conerts (with permission).
He usually posts recordings for bit torrent download. When he does,
I'll forward the info in case any of you are interested and know how
to use bit torrent downloads (I don't).

As a displaced West Coast fellow, now residing in New England, it was particularly delightful to attend the gathering in Portland and catch up with myriad old buddies. First and foremost, however, my thanks to Scott, who welcomed me into his home and his kitchen, without having a clue who I was. I had the chance to play with him in the big jam session on Thursday night (along with a whole bunch of other friendly folk), and have to say it felt like I'd died and gone straight to heaven--haven't had that much fun since Clifftop, and no mud to deal with (at least not indoors). Let there be no mistake, this is one event worth traveling to attend--I met folks from Alaska, Arizona and Florida, and I'm sure there were others from equally distant locations. Besides, Portland is such a cool city, proving that downtown business districts don't have to roll over when the 'burbs start to grow, thanks in great part to planning that stresses alternative modes of transportation and lots of places for people to congregate freely and comfortably. See y'all in 2011.

It was great to meet you our here and share a few tunes on Thursday night! Speaking of folk who travelled a ways to get to the gathering, one of the fiddlers in that Thursday night jam was Rich Kirby who works with Appalshop back in Kentucky. He's made it out to the last few gatherings. He led Briarpicker Brown.

Dave and Bill, it was great to see you guys, too! Maybe we'll see each other at Oly Old Time in February?

Scott, that's a great summary of the POTMG. What an event!

I first learned of the festival when I came across some recordings of the concerts on Sugarmegs maybe 5-6 years ago. I became an instant Stairwell Sisters fan then, as you probably remember from our past messages. It's good to hear that some recordings may be available again. Those old ones had a great influence on me.

Hi David,

That was probably Chip Russell who recorded the Stairwell Sisters show, but he and Mark are buddies. There's a small group of dedicated tapers here who make very high quality recordings at events like Pickathon, Northwest String Summit, and Portland Old Time Music Gathering. Mark said he also did some video taping at POTMG this year. If he posts anything I'll pass along the links.

J-Walk, Candy Girl get's played quite a bit in jams around here. It's one of the tunes Sammy Lind introduces pretty early in his fiddle classes, so quite a few local fiddlers play it. Simple tune, but sounds great when a couple or more fiddlers get to sawing on it. Trevor Stuart's Chicken & Dumplings is another simple tune that sounds great with a couple fiddles. He introduced it out here a few year's back at Pickathon and now quite a few folk play it.

Can't see how I can resist jumpin' in to this topic -- I have the very most important thing to say: I was at POTMG and I had the best days of my life! From the first time I met Scott (Thanks again for everything, Scott), I then met Lisa Ornstein, Rich Kirby, a great new fiddler friend named Crispin (anyone have his email -- I lost it), Jason and Pharis Romero, even Erynn Marshall...and gobs more.

If you even start to think about whether you should join in the next POTMG -- do it! You won't be anything but happy as the old time tunes surround you every moment you are at one of the over-the-top-fun venues, jams, etc...and you can delight at the fact that there is soooooo much music that you will even hear it during your sleep! Not that you'll get much...but you'll get just enough to carry you on to the next day's delights.

Ever had an experience that only lasted a few hours or days but you cherish it for the rest of the year? I totally was one of those kids who couldn't wait for summer camp to begin again starting about 2 days after I left it....dreamed about it all school year long. Now, as an adult, I must admit that POTMG is the same way for me.

There is just no way to describe the fun...a real trip! :) Nope, can't wait til POTMG 2011.

p.s. next time I'm gonna be quicker about getting new friends' emails. Wish more folks were on BHO, but who knows -- maybe they were and we were too darn busy playing tunes to find out!

Here's a coincidence for you, Scott. Yesterday, a bunch of us Tusconians went up to Phoenix to attend one day of a 3-day mega-OT jam. Mary Jane Epps (of Light & Hitch fame) was there, and she led a fiddle workshop on bowing techniques. The tune she chose? Candy Girl! So that one might gain some popularity in Arizona.

BTW, that was an amazing day -- perhaps the best music experience of my life. Probably 30-40 OT players, with jamming going on everywhere. I played for 10 hours straight, with just a few short breaks.

Sounds like a great party, J-Walk! That Light & Hitch album is real popular around here. Road to Malvern, in particular, has been getting played a lot. I think folk have been playing Stillhouse more often, too, since that album came out.

It was great to see you at POTMG Nancy. I don't think I have Crispin's email, but I'll check. If not, if I see him I'll try to get it for you. I think he's just passing through, but some of the folk just passing through are hanging in the area until Oly Old Time in February.
