personally, i feel the opposite. i think the folkier the better. regardless of whether you play bluegrass or old time, the banjo is a folk instrument and it seems like that would appeal to everyone.

I personally would like to see the green of the traffic signal to a lighter shade of green as it blends into the black a bit too much for my eyes to notice it clearly.

Okay. If I'm not to late, here's my contributions based on the Art Nouveau and Art Deco art movements. The colors are picked up from the BHO website, and yes, there is even a Squared Eel silouette in a couple of the designs.

All the colors of shirts can change. I was looking for a dark sage color but couldn't find what I had in mind.

And, I know, I know. The date in the first designs should be 2010 (doh!).

Thanks Scott! Much appreciated. Your design is awesome itself, and I see it's got a bunch of votes already! Looks like the me and all the other contributors got stiff competition.

I had a lot of fun actually. It's not often I get to do graphics for something I am really into, that I got so carried away with doodling I have even more ideas in the computer on the drawing board!

It's great to see a bunch of different and neat ideas coming from everybody that has participated. I like to see what people illustrate when they think of the BHO. Good job to all!

Wow! Jack's 1C is amazing... I was going do another design, but I'm bowing out. I think it's between Jack and Robertsart.... Nice job you guys!

My last design idea was to do the earth as the pot/head of the banjo and stars lining up to make a constellation of the neck. If people think it's worth it I'll go ahead and do it, but I think it's really a matter of either Jack's or Robert's design.

David, I used Adobe Illustrator for those designs. Corel Draw and Fireworks are similar programs to Illustrator, being vector based art tools (as opposed to PhotoShop being a bitmapped based art tool), so if you have either of those software programs, you have basically the same software as Illustrator, just with different features. (I think I'm correct, I haven't used Fireworks or Corel in many, many years).

are using on the shirts but all the designs look like they could be
lowered down the shirt a bit. they seem to close to the neck line.

t-shirt would look good. my vote is for a gray or white shirt with black
ink or a black shirt with white ink.

Yeah, showing a design mocked up on a flat shirt image doesn't really look right, but if you take a look at the printed t-shirts you have in your closet, you'll find that in most cases the design is quite high. There are a couple of reasons for this... Some folks tuck in their shirt so that means (as far as these mock ups are concerned) that you should visually chop off the bottom 1/4 to 1/3 of the shirt. Also, you want to have the image appear on the chest, not the belly, unless it's a large design, in which case you might cover both...

The bottom line is that t-shirts look better (in my opinion) if the image is higher (chest), then if lower (belly). It's sort of the same principle as when you frame a photograph or drawing. You make the bottom dimension of the mat slightly deeper than the other 3 dimensions... it visually appears more balanced and correct.

All this being said, like with anything there are personal preferences. The image below might give you a better idea of how the image might appear on a shirt being worn...

EDIT: I can't speak for JackJack, but based on his fine mock ups, I'd say we probably think alike in terms of placement...

Both the word BANJO and a banjo itself are both prominently displayed. They catch the eye immediately.
The colors (colours for those of you in other countries), work very well together too.

Robertsart - - - no offense meant (I can't do design worth beans), but I'm thinking your emphasis in your design for this year puts more focus on the person carrying the banjo, rather than the banjo itself. And I'm not sure that is a good thing, when it comes to a Hangout Union Member shirt.



The focus of attention in your current design (imo) is more towards the guy nonchalantly carrying the banjo over his shoulder, and it seems (to me) to be more "stereotypical" of how folks look at banjo pickers. Nother words - - - It looks to me like the banjo is more of a "casual" instrument that can be treated with disdain and indifference. Sorry - - - that's just me, and my opinion.

I think the designs are getting too intricate... they look nice, but for a t-shirt I prefer something more basic (less fancy/frilly). In the case of the roberstart design, I much prefer the original. jackjack, I like the layout/concept of yours, but would prefer a more basic font and less details crammed in everywhere.

Good work has been submitted by several people so far... I'm just thinking about which would work best on a shirt.

hmmm...that's an interesting and obviously well thought out opinion. however, i do disagree.
i really, really like this design and think it find a nice balance between simplicity and beauty.
i don't quite see what the issue is with the image focusing on the banjo player as well as the
banjo. we are all banjo players and what good is a banjo without someone to play it (although i must
admit that i disagree with myself here because i sure do like to look at banjos even when someone
isn't playing them).

p.s. to eric. are we going to get to vote on colors too? i know i have mentioned it a ton but is there
any chance that we might get a more basic shirt color to choose from this year, such as black, white or grey?

My idea is to just have a simple banjo with a world map on the head. I have no worked up graphic presentation, I just have made a very simple outline to illustrate what I mean. It needs a lot of refining before it can be used.



The idea is to demonstrate the international dimensions of the banjo. The banjo was brought to America from Africa. Primitive banjo-like instruments have been found in many cultures all over the word. The banjo today is played all over the world, and BanjoHangout is an international forum.
