A new GF-85 is winging it's way to my home as we speak. After reading the reviews I come away with the thought that one of the big issues with the GF-85 are the tuners. Then I noticed the dates of the reviews and read that the tuners are no longer an issue. Does anyone know if the new GF-85 tuners are no longer a problem or am I looking at new tunres in the very near future?

Thanks

MJM

I just recently built a Saga RK-2 kit banjo, and it has the P-140 tuners that I think are also on the GF-85.

Mine all worked smoothly, and all I had to do was tweak the knob screws a bit to get the turning tension right, and they work just peachy.

I had heard that in the past, but I wasn't sure that they had fixed the problem. I haven't been keeping up on the Gold Star's quality lately.

Old news is probably not at all true or accurate now. Just because all the old Ford Escorts (1990) used to break their timing chain is no reason to condem current Fords. They fixed the problem years ago.

The ORIGINAL batch of GF85's (2003-4) had lousy tuners. I have one. Current production, for several years at least, are reported to have fine tuners, with no more problems than any comparable banjo.

Gerry - Exactly why I asked. It doesn't suprise me to hear that they improved the Tuners.

I bought my GF-85 back in 2006 and the only problem I have had with the tuners is that the Fifth String Tuner "Button" cracked and I had to replace it, but the tuner was fine. And one other thing I have had happen was - the Plating peeling off the armrest, no biggy but it bothered me wondering how the rest of the Banjo was built, but I have to say I haven't had any trouble with it at all, and I play between one and two hours a day since I bought it, so over all I think it is a good Banjo. I did have a set-up done also which realy brought out the sound. Good Luck and Enjoy your new GF-85.
