Another couple of my spurious welding projects. I d a word with a farmer friend recently about borrowing some land to set up a shooting range. I’m now l lucky to have a brilliant spot maybe 2-3 minutes walk from home. She asked me I d mind showing her son how to shoot - hell yes! So looking at fun things for a twelve year old boy to shoot, I figured a gong might be fun as well as targets. I bought a hardox steel gong but made the frame out of 16mm (5/8??) rebar - I made it collapsible so I can throw it in the back of the truck. Also, a while back, a good friend of mine sent me a picture, and asked me if I could make something similar for her girls. She has two young daughters with very strong faith, and they are both just about as devoted to their horses as they are to their their faith. I really love these two girls, and it must show… as a terrible welder, doing anything that is ‘fine work’ is incredibly difficult- it’s taken me loads of attempts to get anything near what I want….hopefully I’ll get it even better soon - it’s a fun, but challenging project for a beginner.
Well i fer one applaud your efforts n accomplisments...
Being self taught. Is it's own rewards...
N..nobody has a more critical eye.. than ones self...
I do not think that I meself have ver done a ...perfect job..
Altho I have done many to me satisfaction....
Fwiw... improvement kinda goes hand in hand..with practice n effort..
N doing ever more difficult jobs..
Just looking at what you did.. welding thos little nails.. (kinda finicky)...
Year or two ago you may not have had thos capabilities..

Never welded myself and don’t know much about it , but I know it ain’t that easy. Looks good to me and the horseshoe with the nail crosses for those girls is way cool!!! Love the gong target too. I’d love to get into long ranging, but few areas around here and still devoted to the high power air rifles.
Slammer!!!
From the nit-picking dept.: I don't know if nails with longer shanks are available,* but IF they are, a 90 degree bend would allow putting the tip through a hole and tacking it on the backside.
* I know there's none in my shop, and when I can I like to make-do from my supply of scrap.
I've only ever welded [somewhat passably] with a stick welder and now, shaky + deteriorating eyesight doesn't help. However, just a couple of days ago I learned that a neighbour is a good welder and he's offered to come over and weld stuff for me. Apparently the universe is unfolding as it should! ![]()
Both very neat. I would love to take up welding, but with all of my other "hobbies" I really don't have time, and really not a great place to do it. When I used to make a good few banjo necks, my wife was always complaining about wood chips all over the house. If I were a bit younger I would build a workshop dedicated to my many projects.

Now, Jonty, if you had used a trash can lid, I think I could hit it!
Actually, I qualified "Expert" in both rifle and pistol in the Marine Corps .......... but that was a long time ago. I can still shoot, but do not do a lot of shooting in the "off hand" position. Bench shooting is pretty easy!

Thanks All, those nails were an absolute bugger ! I can do big weld, but small ones are a nightmare for me. Still, it all worked out ok.

John, we have a saying here ''can't hit a cows arse with a banjo'' - quite apt for this site! Pretty mostly every time I ever pull the trigger is in a hunting situation, so I'm looking forward to having somewhere close to home that I could do some range work. Also trying to make it interesting for the lad I'll be showing what's what to - hence the gong.
