Anybody ever heard of a Quince? Hello…Brad?? Anybody? Me neither…until recently. Pronounced “Kwints”…or like Captain “Quint’s”…from Jaws.
Anyways…heading home in the evenings after picking my kids up from daycare the last few weeks, we pass this little guy on the side of the road with a little wooden sign with hand painted lettering, says “Hot Bread”. I never give it a thought about stopping….but my kiddos keep pestering me to, so, I did the other day.
Turns out he’s a little Russian boy selling bread that his mother bakes. He didnt speak very good english, and he doesnt go to school. I tried talking to him about that…I’ll keep on him. Anyways, he had this box of fruit that I had NEVER seen…and my kids wanted some. We bought some bread….SUPER good!!!….and a few of these fruits. He didnt know what to call them in English….but i found them after doing some research online.
And lemmie tell ya…they are AMAZING! They can’t be eaten raw, they’ve got to be baked. They super hard and extremely tart when raw…but when you bake them, it makes them soft and tangy and buttery delicious! Try ‘em!
BAKED QUINCE
-set oven to 375.
-cut each quince in 1/2, and scoop out the seeds and dig out the core.
-jam a few whole cloves in the cut sides, and then place the halves cut side down in a glass baking dish.
- dump about a cup-and-a-half of water in the baking dish. Sprinkle sugar over the back sides of the Quince and in the water. Add a few cinnamon sticks, add a little bit of Vanilla extract to the water in the dish.
-Bake in the oven for 40 mins. Then flip the Quince over so the flat cut side is facing up. Add a slice of butter to the tops, sprinkle with brown sugar, some ground vanilla, then bake an additional 10 mins.
-Remove from oven…drizzle a little Maple Syrup over them….stuff your face! They are GOOOOD!!!
Anybody ever heard of a Quince?
Not that it adds significantly to the discussion, but my lovely and talented assistant had a pretty pretty good idea of what they were/are, but her expertise (?) doesn't extend much beyond that. However, she said she remembered her mother mentioning them. ![]()

Thanks!!
I’be never heard of or seen one in all my years, not at a supermarket, not a tree at somebody’s house, nothin’. I think it’s part of the Apple family.
Me and the kids saved the seeds and are gonna try and grow a tree.
Ya…I feel sorry for that little Russian boy. All little kids ought to have the chance to go to school…Im not sure what his story is…but I’ll check in on him from time to time now.
