I grew up a mile from the lake,, some days were magical ,, swimming, fishing, beachcombing. More of it lies in Canadian territory but it has always felt like a shared lake.

Nope. Lake Ontario.

“Ontario” is an indigenous word used to name the lake long before the USA and Canada were nations. It means “sparkling, shining waters”.

Lake Ontario is my joint favourite body of water, along with the Gulf of Mexico.

Whenever I hear of Ontario I think of "The Black Fly Song" by Wade Hemsworth and Bill Staines who I first heard perform it.

Has nothing to do with Lake Ontario. It does mention the Abitibi river, but that is a long way away from the lake.

I did work at pulp mills in Canada and Maine where I was tormented by black flies and "no-see-ums" on occasion.

I frequently think of a remark made by our son when we were contemplating where we should retire to:  "Ontario?? Why?? .... A third of the people in Canada live there."
