My favorite “Hangman” word: cwm. No one has gotten it. I note that my iPhone spell checker tagged it. So whatever that base dictionary is doesn’t know it either.

Now let me think for a minute* minute .......... think about the intricacies of English during the nite? ...... or think about getting up to urinate for the nth time?   Man this is a toughie.  devil

* not to be confused with a regular minute or a New York minute.

Technically a welsh word rather than English (they're a rightly so nationalistic lot are the Walsh) but it is a great scrabble word.

Yeah , but American English is replete with “foreign” words that are long since part of the language.

I figure ^^ calls for a round of our man Waylon's "I've Always Been Crazy."

[Heck, I even noticed that one person mentioned it as a "favorite" in the other thread. wink ]

I just remembered this old story:

How do you pronounce "ghoti"?

  • gh makes an f sound, just like at the end of tough or enough.
  • o makes a short i sound, just like the middle sound in women.
  • ti makes a sh sound, just like the middle sound in nation. [1, 2]

Put those three parts together, and ghoti spells "fish"

When I first saw that word Bill, I instantly thought of the Welsh language!

You think Engllish is weird?!??   I tells ya, it's got nuthin' on French!!

When we were running a dairy, I used to phone the house to call our 8 or 10ish (?) y.o. son out to pail fed calves after I'd done the milking.  One time I told him to pay particular attention, as I was going to tell him in French,... and followed up with: "Da milk, she's red-ee."   Later, at supper, he commented that he could understand the French okay because, "... it's almost the same as it is in English."
