Just looking for thoughts/recommendations for recording banjo and vocals with reasonable quality, low logistics, and reasonable price. Would likely be recording both indoors and outdoors. Two finger on nylguts with a 12" pot if it matters.

Is a USB mic into the phone worth it or is it not going to be much better than the phone itself?

I use an ATR2X-USB ($30) interface into my Samsung phone. I have a small mixer (xenyx502, used $50) and a sm57 mic (used $60).

I also can record with my steinberg ur12 interface into my laptop running audacity.

I use a PreSonus AudioBox Go (~$80) as an interface and a Shure 57. The interface is supposedly Android compatible but I've only ever used it with my laptop. For recording/editing, I use Reaper, which is free. In my limited experience, USB mics are good for capturing speech but pretty worthless for music compared to a newish phone's internal mic.
