I hope he comes back and informs us of who Greg Reed is.

That's assuming the "g" stands for greg.

To keep the "lost" theme going, I propose it probably stands for George:

[Fwiw, this sign used to stand along the Trans-Canada Highway.  Haven't been that way for some time now ... don't know the current state of affairs.]

I got no beef against Greg Rich. I think he's done wonderful for banjos.

First of all, he doesn't own Gold Tone. He's a consultant.

Second, have you priced Gibson mandolins lately?

Exactly, although the OP's price listing on the mando is actually $100 short. It's $5800, still almost $200 less than the cheapest new Gibson on offer. And it's Gold Tone's top-of-the-line model. They have a number of other models, including F-styles, available for a LOT less.

biggest selling point for that 200 dollar difference is goldtones are made in china and gibsons are usa built

Well, it sorta started out banjo related, in that it involved grich. We subsequently learned more.

I am not sure Greg has anything to do with the mandolin part of Goldtone's instruments.  Regardless, I am guessing that you have never seen or played one of the newer expensive Goldtone mandolins, so criticizing the price without holding and playing one is a little disingenuous.  My Northfield mandolin ....... also made in China .... is probably approaching that price and darn well worth it.  I play it way more than my Gibson F-5.
