I was watching a video of some festival or other and noticed a guitar player with a furry charm/ornament/"thing" hanging from the headstock.
Got me to wondering whether or not a small replica can [maybe made from foam??] of this
hanging from the headstock would be beneficial? ... or do I hafta use the real stuff?

Well, many banjo players hang stuff from the peghead, especially in the OLD OLD days. Ribbons used to be popular, the color of the ribbon indicating the banjo's open tuning -- for banjoists who kept multiple instruments on stage to get different tunings very quickly (rather then retuning). John Hartford used ribbons on his fiddle pegheads for this reason.
It could be something a child or grandchild made for their parent/grandparent.
When I was a teenager starting to play, there used to be an advertised synthetic upholstery material called "Naugahyde", and the company had a little monster-like mascot called "The Nauga". Lots of banjo and guitar straps used to be made out of relatively cheap Naugahyde. I had a little stuffed Nauga (made out of Naugahyde) hanging from my banjo peghead. So did the guy who played guitar with us. I think my dad even had one on his guitar. (My mom and sister used to crank out a variety of sewn goods in those days.)
We ditched the Nauga, and Naugahyde straps, when we started to hear reports of them leaking plasticizer into guitar finish and leaving imprints of the stamped patterns in the Naugahyde
I have known a few guys who had car "freshener" hangers on their pegheads. Like the little cardboard trees you hang from the rear view mirror.
