I saw Clarence in '69 (pic) and '70, with the Byrds. Lots of folks came to see him. He just stood there - and all these notes came flying out.

I like watching the Marty Stuart shows especially when he plays Clarence's prototype string bending Tele.

I saw Clarence with the Byrds in Boston in 1970 at a place called "The Boston Tea Party". They said they were going play acoustically on the second set, so I was looking forward to that. The number of people in the place was way beyond the legal capacity, so the group I was with decided to leave, and I didn't get to hear him play acoustically. The conditions were similar to the conditions that led to the "Who Tragedy" some years later in Cincinnati.

Later in 1973, I went to one of Jim Clark's "Peace, Love and Bluegrass" festivals in West Virginia. Roland White was playing in a band with Byron Berline and Doug Dillard, and I noticed that Roland looked terrible. I found out later that Clarence had been killed in a parking lot by a drunken driver the previous weekend. If he hadn't be killed, Clarence also would have been playing at the festival.
