After due consideration among the mods, we have decided to add Covid-19, (obviously including pandemic issues), vaccination and global warming/climate change to the list of off-limit topics. All are replete with politics, which of course is already banned. Beginning Sunday at 12 a.m. EST, we will start locking and hiding inappropriate topics and posts that cross the line by discussing the noted topics. This will include retroactive actions on current discussions. Please note that this is a considered consensus and not one person’s whim. Eric reads the private moderator forum and has been notified of the coming changes. He has posted neither objection nor changes. As per rule: If you have questions, comments or objections, direct them to a moderator or to Eric. Do not post them.
Thank you.

My friend, Richard Dress (may he rest in peace) would have been lost without the climate change issue. Good decision, on the locks. It keeps banjo lovers more friendly.

kindest,
Yes, tumultous and passionate discourse! Sadly, Richard did pass away I think within the last year. I kept up with him a tad. He had calmed down. Liked the sound of his archtop!

I'll quit posting them when members universally read and follow the rules. One was posted in 2012 and two in 2018. So four in 9 years--not exactly an overdose. The latest are essentially specific extensions based on rules already in place.... Redundancy develops when rules and previous posts are ignored.

I thought sticky topics were threads that were made permanent like some of Jim Pankey's instruction?

After the past few months I think the time has arrived. Some of these incendiary topics are quickly taken over by a few individuals who are only interested in these more volatile discussions. Its easy to get drawn into these arguments but they don't usually give me much pride by the end of the day. The last few weeks has seen a proliferation of conspiracy theorists along with the provided links to their own created sources. This is one extreme blight we all need to avoid for our own mental health and for the health of our own respective nations. The internet has unfortunately given the microphone to every nut job who wants one. If we can't attempt to stay with actual truths what is the point of being here ? This is not the Mensa Club. World breaking discoveries or devine wisdom will never originate from here. I enjoy being here and exchanging experiences on many topics but I never intend to arrive here and listen to someone with earth shattering news that the media is afraid to report. Not everyone is interested in every topic and it will continue that way. On the other end I don't often get into discussions about foods or their preparation methods. The only reason being is that cooking has never been one of my forward skills. For those more active in barbecue cuisine or kitchen taxidermy I hope you continue to contribute your great discoveries.

The Problem: " If we can't attempt to stay with actual truths what is the point of being here ?" Sometimes it is hard because both sides believe they are staying within the truth even when they they are diametrically opposed to each other. Sometimes all are attempting to stay with actual truths but disagree what the truth is.

Well, Son of a Beech! I know us archtop guys are stubborn, snobby, opinionated folks. I should have guessed he was in the fraternity.
There's a famous story (as its told) that occurred in WWI. Tremendous fight and lots of young folks in the trenches shooting at each other. One fellow shoots one because he was shot at. The fighting calms, the one who did the shooting grabs a first aid kit, crosses lines and tends to the one he shot. The fellow is aghast. First one said 'I had to then, now I want to'.
Quite certain just a story, but not a bad one.

Valid point Ken. A typical BHO discussion may lead to someone making an outlandish claim. In the past it only took a day or so for 1 or 2 with equal or more knowledge to set the story straight. In recent weeks we seem to experience hired political trolls working day and night filling up a whole page at a time with canned propaganda. If enough of these people arrive here at once they can fill the site with enough garbage to keep the regular members going day and night to correct these lies. Before the days of the internet we had 3 or 4 radio talk shows in this city. A good moderator would allow anyone to have their say. If they were obvious nut jobs they would be cut short with the blessing of the audience. We don't seem to have that luxury today.
One of the more interesting lessons I learned, as a young Inspector in some of the worst neighborhoods in Milwaukee:
There's the situation.
There's the neighbor's version of the situation.
There's the tenant's version of the situation.
There's the landlord's version of the situation.
There's the LAW.
And there may be some common sense somewhere nearby.
I agree with rinemb , and I would add to people who complain about the threads, why do you read them? If you are not interested in the discussion, don't go there, and certainly don't contribute. I liked the discussions, with the exception of contributions of a very few individuals, because they made me think, they made me research, and they made me learn. I'm sorry that those topics have now been banned. I understand the mods not wanting to read it all just to see if there is an infraction, it's not an easy thing to police. But I'm still sorry that those, along with other topics have been banned.
