For the old-time Tune of the Week, Salt Spring is a modern composition by John Reischman, an excellent mandolinist I've been fortunate to hear, along with his talented Jaybirds band, many times.

A most beautiful tune. The chord changes may sound a little more modern, but the understated melody sounds very old timey to me. Wonderful choice, and superb playing Ms. Janet!

Thanks for stopping in, Simon. Tune of the Week is like a weekly grab bag of all types of treasures. The composer of this tune is somebody who we got to know by going on a bluegrass cruise to Alaska. He’s a great mandolinist in his own band. His banjo player is Nick Hornbuckle, Who is a 2-finger picker you might have noticed here on the Hangout. Nick is the best player I know who does this style for old time. He also does excellent Bluegrass, but lost the use of one of his picking fingers, so uses two.
