The version from Tom, Brad & Alice's Holly Ding CD, with some, er, experimental percussion. Banjo is tuned f#EAEF#, I think.

Is this from Tommy Jarrell? I really like this version - I have heard it somewhere but don't know where. You do a wonderful job of capturing its essence on the banjo.

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, this version is from Tommy Jarrell, via Brad Leftwich, Tom Sauber, and Alice Gerrard. It's on their Holly Ding CD, but I've also heard it on The Young Fogies, played by the Plank Road String Band.

Cathy, This is a great recording. I've been listening to it all day, alternated with Bruce Molsky and Dirk Powel doing "Salt River."
I've heard other tunes called "Sail Away Ladies" but this is obviously a different tune with the same name. (not terribly uncommon in old time music.) What's the bass thumping? Just your own tapping on the banjo head? Sounds great.
Anyway, I seldom keep recordings I download from the forums, but this one is a keeper. Nice job.

Steve, I'm honored that you liked the tune so much. This is a very different "Sail Away Ladies" that Tommy Jarrell said he learned from a Civil War veteran in 1916 or '17. I'm playing the banjo part that Tom Stauber used on the Tom, Brad, and Alice CD.
The thumping throughout is my unruly thumb, which insists on believing the banjo is a drum. The other thumping is an actual drum.
I love the lyrics that Tom, Brad, and Alice found in "Negro Folk Rhymes" and put to this tune:
Never you mind what the rich folks say
May the Mighty bless you, sail away
Sail away, sail away, sail away ladies, sail away.
Never you mind what your daddy say
Shake your little foot and fly away
Never you mind if your mama say,
"Devil's gonna take you," sail away
