A track from the imminent Rattle On the Stovepipe album 'Old Virginia', Wildgoose Records, 2013/14. Originally a short poem by the radical Georgia poet and union organiser Don West - banjo player and ballad singer Hedy West's father. Dave took a verse as a chorus, wrote another couple of verses and put a tune to it. It makes a fine, moving, song about poverty and ever-present death (without healthcare!) in the mountains. Line-up on the recording Dave: vocal/DADGAD tuned guitar, Dan: guitar/banjo/chorus, Pete: fiddle/viola/chorus.

Lovely composition, rendition and recording. I liked the way the fiddle and the quiet, subtle clawhammer banjo playing added a touch of spice just at the right moments in the development of the song.
Poet and a union organiser, eh? Nice combination.
Reminds of a comment in Tim Jumper's "The Banjo Player's Songbook" about the song "You are my Sunshine" which he claims was written by a Congressman. Jumper adds that in his opinion "all Congressmen should be required to compose a love song before taking office."
Union organisers too?

Since writing the above comment, I dug out Jumper's book to check what he says and it seems my memory failed me somewhat. So, I had better correct myself before I get shot down in flames by the very knowledgeable community here.
Jumper writes: "You are my Sunshine was written by the Honourable James Davis, two term Governor of Louisiana. Writing a love song should be a prerequisite for holding public office".
