Genre: Old Time / Playing Style: Clawhammer and Old-Time

This is a West Virginian fiddler Edden Hammons tune. He probably learned it and didn't have the title, so gave it this unusual one. The title is found in similar lyrics in an 1850's shape-note book. He liked it so much he's heard to say, "Ain't that nice" at the end of the recording.

It is nice. I am always amazed how you play such elegant melodies claw hammer style.

Thanks so much, Rick. Actually I'm 3-finger picking this one. It just felt better and I wanted to get lots of 2-finger pinches in.

Almost has the quality of a music box tune. Like it a lot! Wonderful playing.

Thanks, Todd. Edden Hammons has a bunch of wonderful tunes worth learning.

I really like the title, and the way you play the song.

Thanks, Torben. It's said that this tune came from The Blackbird, but they sound too different for me to believe this. It does feel like it could have lyrics.

Delicate n' lovely Janet.... and another Edden Hammons gem yer minin'. Todd's comment is spot-on... I've used the "music box" analogy myself for your playin' earlier. Cheers!

Hmmm, Ken and Todd, I wonder what would be on the top of that music box...Think of what would delight a child...

Janet, so you can make three finger beat like clawhammer and clawhammer melodic like three finger. Awesome skill. I can also confess to not having the best ear, but it does not take away from your considerable skill and touch one bit.

I've recently read that this tune is indeed originally known as the very old English ballad The Blackbird. West Virginian fiddler Walter Cronin recorded it for Louis Chappel in the 40's.
