I have tried to play this for almost two years and still can't get the melody to sound right. I play it fast, slow and along with JD's version, and yes, I know the timing stinks:-(. I try about every six months or so and I just started it again. Played on my open back with Nylgut strings.

Actually the timing is pretty good except for the G Lick where you slow right down. I reckon if you did nothing else but played 20mins of G Licks back-to-back then had another go, you'd be there :-) IMHO.
That said, that bl**dy G-lick *must* be the most overused banjo lick ever. (All the more reason for getting it cracked!)
