Thanks for pointing out A.C.'s use of picks, Gail. I've been practicing with a thumb and finger pick lately as my nails are no longer holding up. I like the tone and crispness but after so many years of playing with my nails, it's taking some serious work to get anywhere near up to speed.

Yes, it's a different sound, and a compromise. I love the warm rich sound that you get without picks. Bare-nekkid fingers would be my preference if I could ever have gotten any volume or an even sound. When I was first playing it was with a band or doubling with my husband & I was told my banjo playing needed to be more "in your face". My entry-drug picks were no. 013 Dunlaps--so light you barely feel they are there. I like a golden gate thumbpick because they're cheap and you can modify the tang with nail clippers & then file them smooth.

Cool version & wicked playing. Maybe someday I'll try picks.
