Genre: Unknown/None Chosen / Playing Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)

This tune is from my CD "Bill Evans Plays Banjo" and features Rob Ickes on dobro, John Reischman on mandolin, Jim Nunally on guitar, Greg Spatz on fiddle and Missy Raines on bass. I was thinking of Sammy Shelor's great playing when I started working on this tune, so I named it after his Virginia hometown of Meadows of Dan. After the release of my CD, I discovered that the great clawgrass player Mark Johnson had also written a tune and given it the same title. The first part of the tune is in the key of A but the second part modulates to F and features a good deal of single string work - the toughest thing for me to do on the banjo!

I was thinking "this sounds just like his cd" and then I read your commentary.  My favorite song on the cd--not your typical BG song.

A really cool tune, cutting edge without losing touch with it's roots.

Nice to hear John Reischman who is without doubt my favourite mandolinists ever since I heard him play in the UK with Sally Van Meter.

Hi Bill, this is just the best!  really like the flow between the Mando breaks, also love your back-up chops, not too strong, not too soft!

Thanks for posting, keeps a newbie like me in tune!

Coming to Portland Oregon soon??

Hi Ira,

Thanks for your comments about "Meadows of Dan" (really, thanks to everyone!) It's been a year and a half since I've been to Portland - I'll get sort of close to you in late March as I'm playing with Jody Stecher in Pistol River and Ashland - but that's still pretty far away, isn't it?

I hope to do a series of concerts and workshops in Portland and Seattle *maybe* this spring but more likely in summer or fall.

All the best,

Bill

I remember this from 2 years ago when i became fascinated with the banjo and was buying every book that i could find including "banjo For Dummies" it used to be my equivalent bible, read it and reread it played along with every song, until the cd got used up, lol i played as an alarm clock every morning, great stuff awesomeness..
