Here is a song I am working on about Lena, who as a 24 year old woman from the far north of Norway left to visit her brother in Minnesota, and while there met and fell in love with the man who would become her husband. Her father insisted she come back to Norway and because she did not comply, he disowned her and they never had contact again before her father died, two years before she passed on. Lena is my farmor (father's mother). I am playing my Taylor guitar, Nechville banjo, and Weber mandolin.

Greg, thanks for your kind words. This has been a totally different project than I've previously done. I've tried to capture some of the emotions my grandmother must have gone through in her life. Part of the story is told in the lyrics below.

Lena’s Song
by Dave Peterson
[G] She left the north of Norway far away,
Came to see her brother, not to [Am] stay,
But [C] days turned into weeks,
[G] Captured by the land’s mys [Em] tique,
[Am] Something tugged her [D] heart, and she re [G] mained.
[G] So many things she’d never seen before
A chance to meet and take in so much [Am] more.
Her [C] father bid her home
But her [G] heart was still on [Em] roam,
[Am] Slow to obey; he [D] locked his welcome [G] door.
[Am] Oh, so far away, Lena’s [G] dream could not [Em] convey,
[Am] Why did her father throw this child [G] away?
He [Am] gave her little choice, would not [Em] listen to her voice,
For [Am] years she longed to [D] go back home some [G] day.
[G] In a foreign land so far from family strife
She fell in love, found meaning to her [Am] life,
Through [C] years her family grew,
‘Their [G] love pulled them [Em] through
The [Am] struggles that they [D] faced as man and [G] wife.
[G] Times were hard and yet their love was strong
Through ups and downs a tragic thing went [Am] wrong.
Their [C] baby sadly died,
To [G] gether tears they [Em] cried,
But [Am] vowed to lean on [D] Jesus and carry [G] on.
[Am] Oh, so far away, Lena’s [G] dream could not [Em] convey,
[Am] Why did her father throw this child [G] away?
He [Am] gave her little choice, would not [Em] listen to her voice,
For [Am] years she longed to [D] go back home some [G] day.
[G] Her heart cried out to go back over there
To make amends and try to clear the [Am] air.
She [C] missed her mother so,
Her [G] dream would stronger [Em] grow,
A [Am] broken heart was [D] more than she could [G] bear.
[G] Her father‘s hardened heart would not embrace,
Nor passing time his stubbornness e [Am] rase
At [C] fifty years she died,
Peter [G] lost his precious [Em] bride,
He [Am] said goodbye with a [D] kiss upon her [G] face.
