Alice Gerrard, & Sharon Poss (now Sandomirsky) & me, fingerpicked banjo. Fiddle & banjo inspired by Bell Spur String band (Ernest Stanley & Martin Marshall-neighbors of Stella & Taylor Kimble, near Laurel Fork, VA). Words from Nimrod Workman. Sharon played guitar with the Fuzzy Mt. Stringband in the 70s.

I actually like this a bit better than Fuzzy Mountain's, which I also like. To say the least, Alice's vocal is way stronger, and the banjo part compliments the singing really well . One of my favorite old time ballads.

Yes, A's singing is fine. The banjo picking is my nod to the playing of Martin Marshall who recorded it on a now out of print Heritage LP, late 60s (Bell Spur Stringband). He played a depression era RB-1, with pickguard. I don't technically pick like he did (wish I could!). He led with his index & I tend to use my thumb, which gives it a clunkier sound. He used 3 fingers & wore thumb & fingerpicks.
