Incredibly clean playing. Same goes for the rhthym. Possibly played on a resonator banjo?

Yes sir, You can see the resonator in the pictures I posted. Not sure what the banjo is.

Chris -
Is he up-picking, or doing down-stroke on this?

he is downpicking on this one. His clawhammer style was smooth, because he seperated the strings rather than the heavy brush. Sounds a little like index lead up picking, but its down.

Thanks, Chris -- I came to the same conclusion... But that lead note is really clean an crisp.
And... since he's such a great fingerpicker, I also thought that index-lead up-picking could be a real possibility.
It would have been nice to find another traditional player who played in a similar way that Seeger did... (I think Clyde Troxell did some index-lead up-picking with a brush-stroke. His "Wild Bill Jones" sounds like up-index/brush to me.)

I'll see if I can find a recording of that. Some called that sling-finger . I know of a few that did that. I'll see what I can hunt down.
