A song about a storied tradition in the Southern Appalachians. My mother's people came from East Tennessee, my father's people from western Pennsylvania, scene of the Whiskey Rebellion. When I was back in Old Tennessee in March, playing music with friends, we had some shine in a mason jar circulating around the campfire. I remember feeling warm and happy. LOL. fCFGC.

Great performance, Dean.  Carefully rendered, like a good whiskey.

The father of my 88 year old Italian American mother in law had a little copper still that sat on top of the old kitchen stove, back in the 30s in the South End of Medford, Massachusetts.  The coil ran under the faucet in the sink.  He used the alcohol to make the anisette and amaretto.  He used to test the proof by lighting up a little of the liquor in a spoon.  After he made up a batch of the cordial, he would give a little in the bottom of a spoon to the kids and say, "Taste, good, good?"   He gave most of it away to family and friends, keeping just enough for his own family's use.  So the old moon used to shine bright in the North, too, they just don't sing about it.

Don,

Thanks for that wonderful story. Yes, I reckon just about every culture on earth has figured out how to distill alcohol and make a local hooch. You're right, it's not a southern thing. It's a human thing. LOL. Best wishes. Hope to meet you at Clifftop. -- Dean

*** This would be a good song to add to a PBS Documentary on the Appalachians.  Nicely done Dean !!!

I heard this song on the jukebox.  Just had to stop and make a comment.  Thanks for posting.
