Named presumably after the abolitionist who stormed the United States Arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in 1859, and who was hanged for treason. There is some thought Brown's march was his march to the scaffold. Ed Benner of Goshen, Indiana, is playing fiddle on this G tune. I forget what banjo I'm playing. LOL.

When the 55th Massachusetts Colored Regiment entered Charleston, South Carolina, on February 21, 1865, John Brown's March was the tune that the troops sang. Charleston, of course, had given birth to the rebellion four years earlier, and its capture held great symbolism for both sides. The white folks hid in their cellars, while the black folks poured out in jubilation to cheer on the troops.
Great rendition, well played. Your die-hard secesh friends will be running for their
cellars!

And when Uncle Billy's boys, the Army of the Tennessee, entered Columbia, SC., on February 17, 1865, where the first articles of secession were drafted and passed four years earlier, well, let's just say they remembered that.
Sherman didn't have time or inclination for bands. Supposedly, after the war, he hated hearing "Marching Through Georgia," when he would appear at public events. Joe Johnston, Sherman's confederate counterpart for much of the campaign, would later serve as a pallbearer at Sherman's funeral.
