Charlie Poole and his Gibson Mastertone

Posted 3/20/2007 10:20:58 PM

He pawned the banjo and got drunk and died at 39 years old - but I sure like the music he played!

Does anyone know what happened to this Mastertone?

I'd ask Pete Peterson (he's on the hangout). I bet you he knows.

Charlie had or had his hands on many banjos. That one looks like the Reed Rakes RB-4 (an early archtop mastertone) which is in a safe place. Kinney Rorrer tells its story in his bio of Poole Rambin. Blues, & Poole used it in his last recording session. One of my favorite old-time pickers, Reed Rakes, plays it solo on Chicken Reel and with a band on Mississippi Sawyer on the WPAQ CD that came out a few years back.
