Hey Bill,
What's the deal with Pogo on the banjo headstock? I'm kinduva Walt Kelly fan and this peaked my interest. I've got one of his original strips and a bunch of his old books. I noticed a couple of the other characters on the inside of the resonator.
Who's Bill Mack? What's this banjo sound like?

The banjo was made by a guy named Bill Mack, according to Elderly Instruments, where I bought it a few years ago. In addition to the fingerboard inlays, there are characters on the front and back of the headstock, the inside and back of the resonator, and the heel is carved as well. It plays and sounds good, too. I like having something different, and I don't worry about whether Earl would play it. When I saw this on the web site I knew it was for me - someone beat me to it, but then backed out, and I got it. The clear head gives it a bright loud sound that I like.

I have been a lifelong fan of Pogo, My kids can quote from the books. I loved Walt Kelly and wanted to make a memorial to him. Sent pictures to his wife but unfortunately she had recently died. Sold it in a time of poverty. Music was always present in Walt's strip. Almost every character played one at some time or other. Seemed an appropriate theme for a joyful instrument. My theory was that the instrument should elicit a smile even before you start playing.

The point of this banjo, I think, is that there was a strip in Pogo in which Pogo said, " Everyone should be issued a banjo at birth," and that this would guarantee world peace. I'm still trying to locate that strip.
