Humphrey Bate & his Possum Hunters featured one of my favorite banjo players of all time, Walter Liggett of Sumner Co., TN. (not to mention Oscar Stone or Bill Barrett on fiddle)

This wonderful promo shot is from the late 20s when the Opry bands began to dress as rubes. Walter Liggett's on the far left with the "Toby" wig and RB-1. He's one of my main banjo inspirations.
Behind him is the very fine fiddler Oscar Stone (Stone's Rag). In the back is the deep soul of their band, Oscar Albright & his bowed bass. Bate (harmonica not visible) is in front holding the dog. He was a practicing medical doctor, trained at Vanderbilt & lived in a 18th century house at Castalian Springs, just east of Nashville. That's his son to his left on the tiple. Their guitarist had a fine Nick Lucas Gibson. A daughter, Alcyon played on the Opry through the 40s & maybe 50s.
