I have been playing with banjo amplification for a while and have not been totally satisfied with what I have experimented with in the past. I have a friend who pretty successfully uses magnetic pickups, but I felt that they sometimes sound a bit bottom heavy and muffled for my taste. I think that is somewhat due to the nature of the hum bucking arrangement used in the current magnetic pickups on the market. I routinely wind my own split coil single hum cancelling pickups for other instruments with an odd number of strings and decided I would throw one together for banjo. I was particularly interested in making a design that was totally self contained and could be installed and removed quickly. Results are promising so far. Good tone, fairly bright, and quiet. You do lose some of the characteristic tone that defines a banjo but it is the compromise that you make with a magnetic pickup. It does not have as much output as I would like due to the distance to the strings from the pickup, but that can be addressed with changing alnico magnets to a stronger type and throwing another thousand turns on the coils. I may use it on stage this coming weekend. I will try to work on refining this as I get a little more spare time.
