Here is a shot of the process that I use to accurately shape the rear of a neck. I use a plastic template as a guide to profiling the neck shape at several locations along the length of the neck. The profiles are quickly shaped with an 80 grit 2 inch sanding drum held in a portable electric drill. After the profiles are established the remaining areas can be quickly planed away using a surform tool or microplane rasp. A short section of board covered with 80 grit sandpaper is used to remove any remaining irregularities. Final shaping and smoothing is done directly with a 220 grit disc mounted to a 5 inch random orbit sander. Its a messy job, but goes fast.

Hi Ron,
The thin plastic template is traced directly from the full size drawings that are available as a free pdf download from my website. The neck profiles are then cut out and used as guides for the shaping of the neck. The drawings were developed from mold impressions taken directly from some of my favorite old necks.
