Jamming at the legendary "Fifth String"

Posted 2/28/2009 12:02:18 PM

Some of you might recognize a young Yoshihiro (Hiro) Arita, world renowned guitarist and banjo picker. Hiro was passing through our area at the time (early 80's), and it was a thrill to get to pick with such an amazing player.

Was that in Berkeley or SF?

Neither, John. It was in Greenville, South Carolina. The store was owned by Al Osteen, a banjo player who played with Jim & Jesse. Collins & Blackwell and the Dixie Bluegrass Boys, and who was a legendary instructor. Al taught many students to love the banjo and Bluegrass music. His students include Kristin Scott Benson, Jim Rollins, and many others, including myself. The REAL Fifth String was here in Bluegrass country, in the shadow of the Blue Ridge.
