Use this guide when cutting segments for producing a 11" rim with 3/4" or 5/8" wall thickness. It requires eight segments per layer with ends trimmed to 22-1/2 degrees.

thanks Randy,
Great tip.the last time I made a block rim I glued up a complete square, then cut out the rough shape on a band saw, then turned it down,
that wastes a lot of wood, and places some of the grain crosswise to the rim.
I can see gluing up decoritive long blocks to cut into segments. so how long will those be?
1 1/2" X 2 1/2 " X ???????? "
What issues come from the butt joints at the segments??

No butt joint issues on block rims unless using less than 8 segments. Less segments encourages tearout when lathe turning rim blanks.
