very nice looking!!! i used to build those but it got to be too much, i made powder horns, smelted balls, the whole shebang! good luck to you though, you do very nice work . are the barrels blued or browned?

Thanks, Fisher and rot-n-dobe. I have enjoyed the building of American Long rifles because it is an open door into a great historical period. To build authentically one has to study the builder and the time period, I believe. Terriffic advanced hobby...consuming and personally rewarding. I am experiencing a similar emotion with banjos!

Thanks, Andy. These were two fine rifles, though greatly different in style. The bottom one is one of three I made for a lady in Georgia who had three sons for whom she wanted to leave a gift. She was very pleased with them.

Beautiful work John! I have known about these all my life but only seen them in display cases. Mathew Gillespie is a distant ancestor.

Thanks for the compliment, Gail. The simplicity and elegence of their architecture really appeals to me. I just completed another one of these rifles for a man in Tenn. One of the Gillespie decendents, Dennis Glazener, has written a book about your family of rifle builders. Great book of rifle pictures plus facts about the family. I have two addresses in my address book and I'm not sure which is current. Here they are if you decide to write him. One of them ought to work. He would be happy to sell you one of the books, I'm sure.
