How did you get a spiral bit long enough? and can you tell me how long the bit is? looks like that rim is almost 3" deep.

I generally use three different length 1/2" mill ends. I start with a 1", followed with a 2" and finally use a 3" four flute end mills. I imagine that one could just use a 3" for all of the cuts for the rim but I think that you will get a smoother cut by reducing the length of each cut.
