The following story comes from Joe Newberry in a hangout forum posting on 4/25/2008: Legend has it that Uncle Dave Macon was standing backstage at the Opry watching Earl Scruggs (whom he usually called Ernest) tearing it up with Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys. He is said to have muttered "Well, Ernest can play the banjo, but he's not one damned bit funny."
