pickin' partners

This is a photo of me with my good friends, John Akerman on keyboard, and Gordon Olson on guitar. We perform regularly together as Akerman, Olson and Wenberg. Gordy is a past president of FIGA, the Fretted Instrument Guild of America, and has recorded with Jeff Grosser, banjo hall of fame member Charlie Khederian, and Mal Cooper--all very fine four string banjo artists. John Akerman, who is originally from Indiana, grew up listening to the likes of Hoagy Carmichael, the Salty Dogs, and west coasters, Lu Watters and Bob Scobey. We met one night at a country and western jam. Some of the regulars asked John to perform "one of those jazz numbers you do." All the others present laid out to listen, neither knowing the song John played, nor the chords. To his amazement, the clawhammer banjo player not only continued to play with him, but also took a solo break. The next week, John called me and said, "I think we can play some music together!" We've been good friends and playing together now for about ten years. --Cjazz
