That's me with Piamini, a seal hunter and village elder of Grise Fiord, the northernmost community in North America. It is in the vicinity of the North Magnetic Pole, about 900 miles north of the Arctic Circle. I was up there to write about the Inuit culture for National Geographic. Piamini saved my toes from frostbite by swapping my store-bought Sorels for a pair of his caribou boots when my toes began losing feeling. Boy, was it cold.
