1925 Gibson Ball Bearing banjo

Posted 9/4/2016 6:14:58 PM

Original except that it does not have the notched tension hoop and flat hooks. I finally put this back together today, Sept. 4, 2016. Its been in in pieces in a box since the early 80's. Probably the wrong size head. I don't remember the tension hoop sticking up above the head as much as it does in this picture. In any regards, I am using the neck on another banjo so wont be playing this one. It's still in real good condition considering it's age.

Thank you Corey. That setup has been sitting in a box in pieces for years. I took the neck off and used the tube, flange and tension hoop for a parts banjo I put together while stationed on the USS Holland AS-32 in Charleston SC. Now that I have the new parts banjo together, (The gold plated setup in my Hangout photos) I was able to re-assemble the ball bearing setup. My father gave me the ball bearing for my 11th or 12th birthday. The neck you see in my photos was the third banjo neck my dad ever built. (Belle Vocce pattern) (Conversion) I will probably have a new maple neck made for my gold banjo and return the Belle Vocce neck to the ball bearing pot. It was a very good sounding arch top, but not the preferred flat head. I'm just happy that it survived being boxed up and moved around after all those years. It cleaned up real good and looks great.
Cheers

May not be a flathead, but it does the highly desirable (imho!) shotgun holes of 1925. :-)
