I find that taping the meter stick to the neck keeps it from shifting. And because it's taped 4 or 5 places, I can remove the tape if it's covering the number I need, without the ruler shifting. Press the tape back in place, and keep on going. In this PARTICULAR case, the neck was already ON. And, since I don't taper the necks, the square was all I needed to make the mark straight across.
