Something broke off. I'll check around for undamaged examples, might make a replacement. On the other hand, it doesn't seem to affect the sound.

It is a meihuaqin or also a traditional qinqin. Google search has a bunch of pics. Wikipedia search has the tuning. Modern style can be called Chin Chin (chinese) Dan Tru (vietmese) and is either 3 or 4 string and looks like a banjo with a snake skin head. Guy just posted about one elsewhere.
