After playing a while with a 1/4" wood top, I hoped to improve the tone and volume by switching to packing tape. It definitely improved the tone, but not so much on the volume. Thanks for the idea, Mike!

I want to try Tyvek. I've heard it's been done, some by using large Tyvek mailing envelopes.
